Need help wiring a typicalair compressor. I had to replace the motor. 5/8 bore 120/240. this should be wired for 120. No instructions, different from the one I'm replacing. So, the pressure unit has a black, white and green wire. Green to ground, no proble. Which terminals do the white and black go to?

The way I read this, you would want: (For 120 v wiring)

Supply Black (and Orange) to post 1
Internal motor wires colored White and Brown to be connected to post 4
    Supply White to post 3

I'm sure others here will also verify, or vilify, whichever is applicable.

If the wire you are holding is FROM the pressure switch, one lead goes to terminal 1, one lead goes to terminal 3. The colors noted are the internal wires, and you need to make sure they are wired according to the "low voltage". Black or white doesn't matter, it's single phase.

If you look closely, the incoming lines are hooked up to the same terminals whether it's 120 or 240. The internal wiring is what needs to be changed.

Thank you all for your help. I finally figiured it out. A large part of the problem is there is no Post 1. The orange wire connects to the back of the board and the posts on the front are 2 thru 5. So I took the damn thing apart to see what was up with the orange wire and post 1. Turns out the orange wir (hot) is connected to the back of post 5. So, white wire to post 4, black wire to post 5 and it works. However, it took me another 1/2 hour to determine that the reason the motor kept cutting out was the pressure switch...fixed it. As usual the whole thing stemmed fro two different things going wrong at the same time. The motor's rotating koil was out of balance...mud wasps...causing it to run rough and the pressure switch was out of adjustment causing the motor to stop...not the out of balance rotor.
