This sentence is the one that is trotted out by the anti's all the time - "I can only think of how much could go wrong. I do not see a “good guy with a gun”: I see a naive human who is more likely to exacerbate a tragedy than stop it." But yet they will accept a Policeman wearing the pistol in the same configuration with no thought. The only difference is the uniform. I don't carry openly, as I wear it concealed, but the naivete that a uniform changes everything in a gun fight is plain silly to me. Liberals feel comfortable when the they have the threat of state violence against the populace as they feel the state is the all power-full OZ while I look at the individual as a part of the defense of one's own right to defend myself and my family. I take on that responsibility knowing that the Police can't be everywhere - I am the first line of defense. People who look to the state for their security is just naive to me. My world and theirs is just polar opposite in thought.

Let's put that in context (not that it's really necessary)............1000 hours is 125 work days (8 hrs). That's 6.25 months (20 working days/mo) of straight through shooting.

Sorry, I was USMC Infantry and sure we knew our rifles but budgets don't allow for thousands of hours of training unless by training you mean work details to clean, clean rifles.
and that budget/training issue is even greater in a police department where an officer qualifies once a year and unless he is an enthusiast its his only time he fires his weapon.

One more thing. The left thinks the reason we carry guns is to protect others. Wrong. It's to defend myself and protect my own. If others benefit, that's a happy coincidence.
As far as I'm concerned, most adults in this country don't even deserve my sacrifice because they are able to carry a weapon for self defense but refuse to do so. I'm not about to enter a world of legal and financial shit by shooting someone to defend a third party that I do not know nor am I related to when they themselves have abrogated their responsibility for their own defense.
They chose their beds, they must lie in them.

Echoing 308pirate and pmclaine, ... his claim to have BTDT is nothing more than bloated ego and, to use his own word, naive. This is an especially dangerous form of naivety because every whack of his endless chest thumping is held onto by the group most ignorant of firearms, and the most likely to use them in violence, the left. I searched his article for evidence of having some level of firearms, tactical, and/or marksmanship expertise and found absolutely zero. His opinion of himself reflects the broad public notion that anyone who has served in the military or having worn a badge is competent with a firearm.
Most cops I know, and I know and am related to quite a few, are absolutely not gun people. It's just not their interest and is not what they are thinking about doing on the weekends. Outside of a few in the FBI, none of them have a department that sponsors any kind of training. Periodic qualifications are laughable. Such quals give some cops and far too much of the public a sense of competency that can, at times, be frightening. Every single cop I know that I consider being truly competent with firearms has spent considerable amounts of their own time and money for training. This holds true for a few that I know on some big city SWAT teams. Two of them spend time at my Dillon 650 because that is what makes it affordable for them. This is a shame and gets in my craw.
To become competent with firearms takes far more than graduating from the academy, having been wrung through basic or boot, or being a proud American, or all three. There are shooting ranges across this country that have permanently ejected cops and military veterans for a variety of serious safety infractions. Marksmanship is a perishable skill that must be maintained. For the very good it is a way of life.
In short, this article is shit because it comes from someone who did not and has not joined the ranks of those competent in the very area he claims to be an expert. From Townsend Whelen to Pat McNamara I do not recall anyone who practices this art to an elevated degree who calls out their gender identity as a qualification. This is the sort of fashionable bullshit required to get the attention of MMM. To me, it is no different from others on the left who feel the need to have a 24k gold grill and a nickel plated 9 to establish authority.
I am not asking this writer to go away and I do not wish for the left to stop putting their nose into an area over which they are horribly ignorant. I invite all of them to take some time to honestly get to know us. We come from every walk. Some are cops, some are veterans. Most are neither. Many have spent several decades and even millions of rounds perfecting their skills. And we are a more welcoming community than you may expect. So put down the NYT and gas up the car for a drive to a PRS match, take a class at K&M, spend some time at regional 3G and USPSA matches. I would especially like to see how this author performs at any one of these. Probably not as well as he thinks.

In the Wal-Mart shooting a few weeks ago there were supposedly 8 others in the store with guns (legal ccw) and none of them fired a shot.
The anti-gun came out and said "see more guns did not help". Like they expect people to fire from the back of the store to the front.
Not knowing a situation it is going to be hard to get involved. Someone i know/love is going to have to be in trouble before i get involved.
so hes an army vet...that ,makes him an authority on defensive firearms use?
i mean no disrespect to our MIL guys.....but ive seen plenty of former MIL who barely know which end of the gun bullets come out of.
i recall hearing that 90% of the military is serving in a non-combat capacity, which is to be expected, it takes an army to run an army....but being a line cook or a pencil pusher doesnt make you an authority on defensive use of firearms......hell, even being infantry or seal team6 wouldnt make you an authority either...as the ROE for engaging an enemy is a lot different that use in a civilian encounter.
regarding the "good guy with a gun".....i really dont know how this guy has a leg to stand on.....considering it was literally a good guy with a gun that interviened in the TX church shooting.

and it was at least 8 armed "good guys with guns" that had the discipline to not pull the trigger at walmart. Same at Gabby Giffords shooting. An attendee was armed but did not draw and begin Final protective/suppressive fire because he wasn't able to make sense of the situation in order to knowledgeably act.
The left makes the mistake or willingly promotes the false argument that the lawfully armed citizen wants to interact with the criminal gun user.
That's not the case.
The mind set is "last resort" and "only if I cant escape".
Nothing cowardly in that either.
You are likely less equipped, unaware of how many you face, and who around you is a friendly and may be armed.
The bad guy has the advantage in having 100 percent certainty in who is friend and foe.
