Some questions on a 6.5 CM custom build

I was planning on going the LRP route and getting it threaded but it seems like going with stuff from Jim might be the better choice. I will be running a can 100% of the time so I need the barrel threaded and it looks like its only a couple hundred more than an LRP and a thread job. Does criterion offering threading?

A big reason I was looking at the LRP is because of the HS precision stock. Ive been very happy with the two that came on my 308 and 300WM R700 5Rs. With a stock pack they get the job done for me and I do not like the cyborg looking chassis stocks, just not my cup of tea. The lowest Ive found an LRP is 940ish delivered, then to get the barrel threaded locally would be 150 so I was figuring on 1100 ready to shoot. 1700 for a gun with a quality barrel and manners stock doesn't sound too bad. This will be primarily a bench gun and I will build a hunter setup out of my 308 5R once the barrel is done on it.

Im really glad this thread came up, now I know what to do when Im ready.

First off 1slow I'm glad this thread helped you out, it sure did me! Honestly I think you can go the route I did even cheaper than that if you go with the manners. I think they're cheaper than the mcrees. 500 for the action, 300-350 for the barrel, and whatever the manners will cost you. Plus whatever other goodies you want from Jim like barrel wrench,etc. Apparently criterion offers threading too. Put a Ross brake on for 45, you're all set.

The stock I want is ~800 so itll be right around 1700 with threading, which Im ok with as itll pretty much be an entire custom gun at that point. Ill be using a griffin armament taper mount muzzle brake so I can use my recce 7 can on it. Ill probably add a timney trigger to it as well since I love them so much in my R700s.

wow, that's going to be a very nice setup when it's done...must post pics and let us know, but I think that is going to be a very accurate rifle that will be pleasant to shoot!

That is very useful info...so if I assess this right,a 26" bull with a brake will still be plenty accurate, have longer life, but at the cost of added weight.the only question I would then ask would be is it still comfortable enough to run comps with or would that be a major nuisance?

essentially yes. except for the longer life part. I don't think you would get longer life out of the bull barrel as compared to the varmint. They should be the same becuase the throat would wear out the same.. All else being equal. I've run 3 sniper comps that actually had movements with the rifle during stages, irregular shooting positions, kneelings, barricades, etc., walking from stage to stage, etc. and I didn't have too much of a problem and I'm a small guy @ 5'7" and 125lbs. I don't think the lighter barrel would have made much of a difference if any at all. Except for taking a few (5 i think) from the kneeling position. Other than that, I did fine.

Also, changing from the bull to the varmint barrel later down the road, you won't have any problems. Nothing will need changed, etc.

But just put it this way, I personally, will lean towards the varmint barrel once I need to rebarrel. But that's not to say I hate the bull barrel, just unneeded weight and front-heavieness if I want to get very serious into comps.

I would really give the Tikka T3 a look in 6.5 with a KRG chassis, match made in heaven. -Evan
