Some Savage ?'s

I picked up a pre-accu trigger Savage this weekend at a gun show, and have a few questions I'm hoping someone may be able to answer. I'm wondering just how old this rifle is and if it will work to build off of.
The rifle is a 110 30-06 with iron sights and a pencil thin barrel, an aluminum butt plate and it also says 30-06 proofed on the barrel. The barrel has a bulge where the rear sight is mounted. Why? Also at the rear of the bolt is a large slotted screw looking mechanism, the guy I bought the rifle from said this was to adjust firing pin tension. Is it really?What is this? The old Savage 110 I had wasn't like this, but it was an old Tactical model 110 in 30-06.

Can't speak for the other specs, but:

I've got an early 90s vintage 110 that has a slotted screw securing the bolt handle...that's simply an old style before the newer hex-head screws started being used.

The bulge is built in to the barrel, looks like it's there for the iron sight. Sorry if the original post was misleading in that aspect.

So I should be able to get a barrel and stock and start my first build with this rifle.
Any suggestions on barrels, the rifle will be used to hunt and punch paper/ring steel. Am thinking med contour, around 22" with a 1:10 twist, possibly threaded for a brake. Am hoping to one day be able to get to 1k, after some training.

if you want to go for long range get a barrel from savage-barrels.com in a 7mm magnum or your choice and start out with a better long range round, idk what barrel coutour to go with.

That's the older 110, I just picked up a 7mm 110 and barrel is already pulled and waiting on the brown truck today!! To my knowledge Savage hasn't changed the LA screw spacing, the slotted screw can make the bolt lift mod more work but still doable.

ok.... you have an old 110... the BAS ( Bolt Assembly Screw ) can be switched out to a hex, the only advantage is that the Hex head it a little easier to take out. there have been some slight bolthead changes, but everything will work, Savage has NOT changed the LA screw spacing, so any LA Savage stock will fit, only thing you need to know to order a barrel is if your rifle in small or large shank, it SHOULD be small... now for the great part, your rifle should also have the old 3 screw trigger, which can be adjusted out pretty nice...

My suggestion, since it's a first build, order a ER Shaw barrel kit from midway, in 308, I say 308 because it's easy to load for if you want to learn, if you don't, it's easy to find good ammo, it uses the same bolthead as your 30-06, ER Shaw offers a 20" 308 barrel, that's already threaded... then pick a stock, adjust the trigger to your liking, and have fun....

Above info is correct, its the old long action (screw spacing should be right at 5"). I have a 116 la that has the older style slotter bolt screw and had no problems disassembling the bolt, just need a huge screwdriver. All the aftermarket tactical style bolt knobs (as well as the bt and other factory bolt knobs) will fi.
Go over to savage shooters and check the members classifieds sections for barrels (members classifieds are $12 a year, but I saved more than that the first purchase I made over there). There are always used barrels there that are almost new, and discounted greatly. If you would rather buy new, check out mcgowen, lothar walther, etc. Check with Northland shooters supply for take off barrels (or new ones), they always have a bunch in stock.
Stocks will be limited on the long action.

Sell the parts you take off on savageshooters also, recoup that $12 for the membership. You will be surprised how many people want pencil barrels for hunting setups or just experimentation over there. I sold a 3006 ss factory sporter for $100 shipped once. if you upgrade the trigger and bolt knob, those will sell too.

The factory Savage large bolt knob from Midway fits my older 110 perfectly.

I thought it actually does keep the tension on it? Maybe not soo much adjusting, but could have been a simple mis-speak.
Thats the issue with the bolt lift mod is if you don't compensate for the increased height, you'll get more pressure. At least that's as I understood it.

With this being an older 110 w/ blind mag,stagger feed, will I be able to convert to a DBM? And how would this work if wanting to change caliber to .308 from the '06?

CDI makes DBM bottom metal for the long action 110...

Another quick question. Anyone know where I can find a base for this? The reciever is flat at the rear. Does anyone make a 1 piece?

You can find a long action, flat rear, one-piece base at just about any online retailer; EGW makes a 0MOA and 20MOA picatinny bases if you're inclined that way.

i think farrell still makes a 0moa and a 20moa. EGW also makes these.

Contact Jim from NSS and see if he has any Criterion barrels available for what cartridge you want to put on your build. I've heard many great things about the Criterion prefits. You can also get a new recoil lug from him too. He also sells Shilen prefits as well.

+1 for Jim at NSS. I have ordered several things from him, a criterion 260 AI barrel being one of them. The thing shoots awesome.
