So my oldest son (7) and I headed down to the family ranch for one of the last two weeks of extended youth season. We climbed up in the stand Saturday morning and nothing even stirring. We head back to the camper and go back out around 5:00. Saw several deer moving as we went up the road and the scene was set. Up in the stand about an hour when my little brother calls out "got a pig." We watch for a while and he ambles along out at around 300y. Slowly he works his way toward us at around 100y. We get my kid set up in the stand with the AR so he can shoot down (our stand is on 20' legs). He gets down on the gun and I call it "shooter ready," Kid says "yes, daddy." I say "send it" Guess 68gr Hornady Match BTHP works on pigs.
So we take pics, chat, call mom, etc. and decide to get back in the stand for the last 45m of daylight. About 15m after being in the stand, my little brother spots a doe walking up the road. Clearly old enough to shoot, so we get my kiddo moved over in the stand for the shot, now facing south instead of east. His first look through the glass and the doe is facing him. He asks me what to do and I say "let her turn a bit" He gets ready and tell him to shoot when ready. Right as he is about to shoot, she walks away behind some trees and my kid looks at me with a "wtf just happened Dad?" So we keep watching as she walks all the way out to 150y and gives him one shot through a 4'x4' opening in the trees. He sends it right down the pipe. She goes about 20y and.....
Same bullet also works on deer. Neither bullet exited and both were almost perfect shots. Using my hodge-podge AR with Millett DMS-1 optic. Nice. I am a proud Dad. Excellent shot placement and control. Plus, he stayed down on the gun until we called hit. Pretty good for a 7y/o.
