I bought my 5 year old a Marlin XT-22Y. The length of pull is a little long for him but when he shoots prone it's not bad. It's a good little shooter.

at 6 the biggest problem you will have is the length of the frame (dont just want one with a cut down stock with adult length foregrip distance) and weight.

The Crickett isn't too bad. The size is what sells it. If your kid can fit into a CZ Scout, that is probably the best youth rimfire rifle.

I'll second the XT-22.
I have two sons, 8 and 11 and bought each of them an XT-22 about a month ago. The 11 year old is big for his age...the 8 year old a bit small.
I took about 1.5" off the stock of the 8 year olds (which I of course saved to re-attach when he grow into it) and fitted each with Bushnell's 3-9X40 rimfire scope...$40 each, and not bad little scopes. (both boys have a years experience with iron sights on their pellet rifles...hence going with a scope)
Anyways, the 11 year old is easily shooting 1" groups at 50yds...the 8 year old is down to 2".
I tried out a couple different brands of ammo and found the guns like Federal Eagle solids. In the month we've gone nearly through a 500rd box and have not had a single mis-fire.
In my mind these are the 'Cooey's' of modern guns.

Hahaha... my daughter is only 7 months and she already had a Sako quad 17hmr build with a USO.....
For that price range I'd also reccommend a chipmunk. Buds has them for $145 and the stock is made for shorter LOP's.

Your grandson is lucky. My grandfather started me off with a Remington 870!special purpose magnum 12 ga when I was five. The logic was that the .22 can kill miles away and the birdshot will only kill what you can see. I did not grow into that shotgun until 10 years later. Looking back, I think it might have been a little big. Maybe a 16 ga would have been more appropriate. Haha

I was thinking about a cz 513 basic for my 9 year old. I thought it would be a good middle between the scout and special trainer. Anyone have an opinion on the 513?

Started my girls with a 915YS, rifle is light and accurate. Comes with Williams fire sights.

A Henry Mini Bolt Youth .22 is a good American made starter for kids.

Look around at the gun shops, gun shows, Guns America, and so on, for a used youth model Marlin single shot bolt action. They're out there and they make a good first rifle.

Started my son (and one nephew) 15 yrs ago on CZ 452 youth rifles. It has the 16" barrel and iron sights (which I think is a better start, then going right into it with a scope). Anyways, great rifle, robust, durable and best of all, it'll fit in an adult stock for a "scout" type configuration as they grow/grew.
