Im breaking in my gunsmithing cherry on a Sako mosin m39, has anyone sporterized one of these? If so the front and rear irons are different than a 91/30 or other models is removing them different also?

Re: sporterized mosin nagant M39

I have 2 M39's one is staying in its military configuration, the other is not going to be bubba'd up. If I chose to return it to its original configuration I could. Now with that being said I have purchased an ATI stock and everything Rock Solid offers. Yes I know to install the scope mount you have to drill and tap holes but with a Tig torch and a little buffing you never know i drilled those holes. The iron sights dont seem to have the pins or raised block under the rear sight like a 91/30 so I believe it can be removed without cutting but would like to know from someones first hand experience if that is possible.

PM me what you consider a "fair" price. You guys know you can find the M39's one multiple sites for $200-$400. My gun broker has 7 M39 mosins all re-armored. Meaning none shot bullets during a conflict, its not like im chopping my dads M1 garand which killed japs or his sprng 1903. Im just looking to build a rifle that is half ass accurate and shoots cheap ammo unlike my Rem 700.

Re: sporterized mosin nagant M39

I've been wanting to change one of my mosins into a "tactical" look just so I can see if it looks good.

I've thought about just duracoating it black, but does anyone here think I could buy a remington 700 adl stock and alter it a little to fit a mosin?

I would like to put it in an aftermarket stock or one of the cheap synthetic ones that come with the 700's

Re: sporterized mosin nagant M39

i love idiots that act like mosins are something special and shouldn't be messed with...hell i bought an m44 JUST to mess with...why? cause who cares? mosin guys still aren't as ignorant as Glock guys though.....change 1 part on a Glock and they'll tell you it's ruined lol

Re: sporterized mosin nagant M39

Boyds or ATI would be my suggestion if your wanting to replace your mosin stock. Just from my research though. But im sure if you find a stock that fits a reciever and action similar to the mosin a dremel and bedding compound will snug it up.

Hahaha Glock tards. A couple of old highschool friends are now sheriff deputies were I live, they swore by Glock till I out shot them in various drills with my S&W 4006. Then they bragged about how they never jam, neither has mine and I run Georgia Arms canned heat ammo through it.

Re: sporterized mosin nagant M39

OP PM inbound. I am neither an idiot nor do I believe they should not be messed with. In fact I've modified a shit ton of Mosins, mostly M39s. Not to mention the Mausers,03 Springfields and every other Mil-surp that at one time or another had cheap ammo available. The reason I offered to buy and exchange for it is simply barring a couple other Finnish built Nagants, the M39 is the finest most accurate example. The others include the M28, predecessor to the M39, the M28/66 and M28/76 target rifles and my current project the TKIV 85 sniper rifle. The latter there is still in use by the Finnish military.

I built one M39 by making a side rail mount that required machining a flat on the receiver. This allowed an 8x PSOP Russian scope to be mounted, nice and low and slightly to the left. That optic has a BDC elevation turret calibrated to the 7.62x54 round. It was rather pleasant making first round hits at 800 meters with an old relic.

Another was done like a L39/42 Enfield with the forend shortened to the middle band. Another side mount but with a Picatinny rail this time. Same result.

I tell you this because I started working on guns by cutting up old military rifles. You obviously want to learn yourself and most here are supportive of that. The thing is those rifles are easily capable of shooting 1-1 1/2 inch groups at 100
yards, bone stock with heavy ball surplus ammo.

On that topic, the M39 was not designed specifically for the D166 projectile. If you inspect a bunch you will find many with a "D" marked barrel, on top of the barrel shank just ahead of the receiver. This meant they had had the chamber cut with a longer throat so the Finns could use the millions of rounds of 181grain heavy ball captured from the Russians. The Russians used this in their machine-guns. It's usually denoted by a yellow tip. They usually shoot very well with the lighter 147grain surplus that is still available cheap. If I can help just holler.

Link to a photo of my M39 mosin completely finished. Put it in a Boyds stock rather than cheap plastic. Accurate weapon with 182gr heavy ball surplus, I've shot it out to 500 yds with the wind kicking. You couldn't tell the difference between my grouping and a friend's 700 with a nighforce and AICS . </div></div>

Nice job. Please post range pic's when you get a chance.

Re: sporterized mosin nagant M39

I will hopefully get to the range this weekend although I did shoot this rifle on July 4th when I had it in a crappy ATI plastic stock that warped when the barrel heated up causing it to no longer float. I did an ammo test between 4 different types: 174 gr Brown Bear "match", 148gr surplus, 182gr heavy ball surplus yellow tip, and PPU 182 "match". Although the shots strung out due to the stock contacting the barrel the 182surplus shot the best. I will conduct the same test with the Boyds stock it is in now to compare and will post my findings. The action has aluminum pillars and acraglass bed job and barrel is completely free floated this time.

Have you slugged the bore? A friend of mine got a box stock Finish NOS M39. Used Sierra 175's and that thing shot sub minute all day long at 200 yards. BUT.. slug the barrel.. and if it's over .3084-5.. think about a larger bullet diameter. We did! But we handload.
