I'm trying to make up my mind on a new spotter purchase. I'd like to be able to see 5.56 shots on paper out to 300 yards. It is down to the Razor 16-48, Razor 20-60 or Viper 20-60. The Razor 16-48 has a great deal available right now, but concerned the 48x is not enough to easily see hits on paper out to 300. Can anyone with old eyes like mine give me a definitive answer? I'm not very young anymore and my eyes are approaching 50 years old and don't work as great as they used to, but I'm not in glasses yet. Thanks.

As long as mirage is low you might be able to pull that off. That is a mighty small hole to try to spot clearly though. Shoot-N-C targets would be advised.

Regardless of the spotter, atmosphere is going to play a much bigger role than glass quality. I have no experience with those scopes, but they have gotten good reviews here. You usually get what you pay for in the world of optics.

48x is absolutely plenty though.

someone else suggested the camera system and I like the idea but am concerned others at the range would put a bullet through it. accidentally of course.

i want to hang a phone adapter and my iPad off the spotting scope for seeing the shots on paper. i figured the nice screen on the iPad makes it easier to use. my depth perception is not what it used to be and using the spotting scope at all is not very easy or pleasant. someone showed me theirs with a iPhone attached to it and i thought it looked pretty cool and the image was great. it was a $3000 swaro so I know mine would not be as good.

That is a mighty tall order IMHO depending on the type of target.

I am 55 and still have OK vision. I shoot my 5.56 @ 300 yards using the official SR-3 target a lot. I have a pretty nice spotter in the Kowa TSN-82SV with a 60X eyepiece. Being able to see the holes is very dependent on the mirage factor but also dependent on the ambient lighting. An overcast day makes it really difficult to see. A splatter target makes it much easier.

I don't think a more expensive spotter would make any difference and it would cost a ton more money than either my Kowa or the ones you are looking at. At that level of optics, it comes down to your eye's ability to resolve small details at a given ambient lighting condition. That along with the mirage are the limiting factors.
