I'm building a SPR 556 right now, should be a tack driver when I'm finally done. But I'm kinda stuck when it comes to deciding what scope to get.

I'm almost positive I want a ballistic reticle. I want something that I can have fast target acquisition out to ~600 yds, but still be able to take close in shots. Most likely I'll be feeding it 77 gr match kings.

I really don't know what I want to spend, so I'm kinda open to suggestions. Obviously, if I can get what I need for less, all the better.

Opinions/suggestions?

Also Vortex PST 2.5-10x32, SWFA SS 3-9x42, Leupold VS-R 3-9x40, and on the "budget" end Weaver GS Tactical 3-10x40. I have a Weaver on my pseudo-SPR, and while the optic is elevation limited (16.5mil total) I've got enough elevation from 100yd zero to get 77gr Noslers to 700yd (2660fps, 500' ASL).

For the ballistic reticle option, I recommend you head over to Nightforce and use one of their velocity reticles on a 2.5-10x. For your setup the LV600 should be the match-up. Another option is the Leupold Mark 6 with the 7.62 CMR-W reticle as it matches pretty closely to the 5.56 77gr at the velocities you'll run, and should do you well inside the ranges you want to shoot.

If you want to run a regular reticle, any of the above recommendations will be sufficient, budget depending. Pick your scope and the applicable durability/reliability to how hard you actually intend on running it, then start saving your pennies if the budget is an issue.

For me personally, I don't bother with FFP under 10x unless it's an optic that drops down to 1x, so don't worry about NEEDING the FFP feature. I've tried it, didn't use it or really like it either.

ETA:

SPR optics I've run so far: SWFA SS 3-9: Good overall, would prefer if it would have had zero stops, tunneled a bit at low mag loosing the wider FOV advantage, small but still useful reticle at low power, just less than ideal and I never used the mildots at low power. Sold it.

Leupold Mark 8 CQBSS M-TMR: Very good optic, not the best below 3x but still very usable including up close and personal. Awesome at top end and I love the turrets. Replacing it on my MK12 for a more spec build and going with a Leupold 2.5-8 TS-30 A2. The CQBSS is going over to my carbine .308.

S&B PMII 3-12x50: Ran this between scopes, way too large and heavy for this use. Decided to try and keep it under 25oz after this one for balance purposes, and going lighter still is better.

I'm building a second SPR/3-Gun rifle and am going with a Mark 6 for this one. I have both a TMR and a CMR-W 7.62 version that I'm going to test on it, and one will end up on the 16" carbine with the other going to the 18" barreled rifle. Sorry but I'm overseas and haven't gotten my hands on them yet to give you a report on those.

I run a NF NSX2.5-10 x32 on my SPR. Never got the chance to shoot past 300y since long ranges in NJ are not existent, but no problems yet.

If I could muster up $1500, I'd like to try out the IOR spartan 2-12x. It's got a 74' field of view at 2x, and the illuminated mp8 reticle looks sick. It seems like the perfect mag range for an spr.

I like the Bushnell Elite 1-6.5 FFP BTR2 for my 18" SPRish build. On 1x, its pretty close to shooting a red dot sight, and on 6.5, I have a Mil based reticle with 10(!) Mils of elevation in the reticle. Covered knobs....no worries.... and enough power to ring steel at 814 yards.....

Yeah I had a couple IOR Spartan 2-12 scopes and they kinda were lacking, broke one on an AR-10 with about 500 rounds downrange and sent it back for a replacement. It had a great reticle and the BDC worked but the FOV was WAY below 74', more like in the 40's. The replacement had the worst turret ever. The illumination was very functional and I used it out to 800 yards on my 20" AR-10. Also it was heavy as a brick.

I have two SPR Rifles. One wears the NF 2.5-10mil mil. For SPRLight or Reece type build. Great scope, great to get you out as far as your 77gr SMK will get you. 1,000 if your just popping steel. My heavy build has the full sized 3.5-15 NF MLR on it minus the sun shade. It's kinda heavy with a PRS STOCK and 18 WOA.

Another good option is the Bushnell DOA Reticles. You can buy the cheaper 3-9 with one inch tube. Or the much better much more expensive 30mm tube. For quick a shot. They work pretty good.

Good luck on your build.

Man, that's kind of a bummer, I was hoping they were going to be pretty smokin.... For the money it's probably to stick to the proven scopes...Shifting my lusting back over to the Nightforce 2.5-10x32.

I like my SS3-9x42FFP. I was all set to do the NF thing a few years ago, but could not justify the 2x price. No regrets with the SS.

However there are a lot of interesting options now. Some of these 1-6 and 1-8 scopes would allow an spr to double as a 3gun rifle!
