springfield 03A3 308

Re: springfield 03A3 308

The 03A3 was never chambered in .308. In their original .30-06 they were very accurate. They originally had either 2, 4 or 6 groove barrels depending on maker and month of mfg.... most being 2 groove including many of the 03A4 sniper rifles.

I assume this is what you are referring to ? This one is mine, (poor pic) an all original Smith Corona (October 1943) M1903A3, 4 groove barrel... it's very accurate.

Re: springfield 03A3 308

The only reason might be standardization. I briefly considered using a Navy Sleeve in mine since everything else I have including a Garand is .308. But the downside is that you would probably need to shorten the magazine follower and use a custom spring with a spacer block to prevent the shorter rounds from unstacking under recoil unless firing single rounds.

Too many cons, not to mention lowering the collector value of these fine rifles. They are already getting hard to find. Won't be long before they are as rare as Civil War Springfields. A lot of them were produced too, relative to the population level of the period.

Parallax, the rifle I looked at listed as a 03a3 does not resemble yours at all. . The one that I am looking has a modern stock. I believe the guy made a mistake with numbers
