I am wrapping up my shopping for parts for my 2nd Robert Gradous tactical build. All that is left is to make a final decision on what I want for 34mm rings.

From all the research I have done on SH it seems like Spuhrs are the Cadillac for rings. A close 2nd would be either Badger or Seekins.

The cost of the Spuhr’s is not an issue. I am just hoping that some present owners could tell me their thoughts on these rings or from others that have used or seen them.

Are they worth the $400 plus cost vs. the $200 for the other two? They are definitely heavy duty and extremely well made.

I was hoping to find a set in the classified but have not seen any lately for sale.

All of my decisions for this build have been made with the help and advice from both Robert and SH members . I am now just looking for some final advise/ feedback on the last bits and pieces.

Thanks guys.

Re: Spuhr Ring Questions

I ordered mine from TNVC but the UPS man paid attention to the req signature note today... doh!!!!!

I'll be working from home tomorrow to make sure delivery does not get missed. Can't wait to set up my TRG 42 in .338. I hope to be making the loudest noises at the 100 yd range on Sunday :)

Re: Spuhr Ring Questions

I have a Spuhr 6 mil cant mount on my AI AW and it's a great system. For me, my AW has a flat picatinny rail permanently bonded to the action so I have to have a canted mount. The choice would have been the AI one piece mount or the Spuhr. For me either would have worked fine, but I figured on a rifle that expensive, I might as well get the nicer mount. I have not used the accessory mounts to mount other stuff on my Spuhr. I really like how the rings minimize the view obstruction of the turret number scale. I also like the bubble level integrated into the mount. Next I'll probably get the angle cosine indicator. I have a GAP rifle with Seekins rings and they are also top notch.

Keep me posted on what you think of them.

Re: Spuhr Ring Questions

Heading out to go zero my TRG42 in a few minutes. First impressions are this is definitely a quality piece and it looks like it is an OEM item for the TRG.

A couple of notes on the assembly. I used the bubble level in the unit in conjunction with machinist level on top of the scope to get things squared up. I couldn't figure out how to use the wedge that is included. My parallax and illumination knobs were in the way on my SS 5x20HD. Also, as I was torquing the ring screws down I rounded one of the twelve screws. I was using a Borka torque wrench and the correct sized torx head. I think it was a combination of the screws being at an angle (due to the design) and it really felt like a soft screw. The other eleven screws were fine. I did manage to get all of them torqued to 20in-lbs but I think I'll be looking for a new set just to know I have it perfect. As a comparison, I've never had this happen on my BO rings and I used to be a resident engineer for DeWalt/B&D tools so I I know a thing or two about machine screws and assembly. Sometimes you just get a batch that can be inconsistent.

If it is shooting one hole, I'm sure I won't be taking it back apart, if it isn't, well, then I've got a well documented excuse

Re: Spuhr Ring Questions

Hi

All screws are stainsless steel of the higher 80 quality.
However it's not as strong as a good tool steel screw but as noone really want non stainless in a military enviroment we have choosed to go for stainless.
The quality is not a problem, but the TX20 hole is pretty shallow and it's by far the easyest to use a screwdriver type of torx key.

The screws are made for up to 25 in/lbs torque, but we do recomend 15 in/lbs as some scopemanufacturers have 15 in/lbs as maximum.

Regards Håkan

Re: Spuhr Ring Questions

There was another thread on the hide where 20in-lbs was recommended. Since there were no instructions, I went with 20... that is probably the issue along with not squaring it up perfectly.

Re: Spuhr Ring Questions

I figured it out and it was complete user error on my part. I used a T15 sized head on the ring screws when it actually takes a T20 sized head. Now I'm not sure how I even got close to torquing them to 20in-lbs.

The good news is that I only nicked up the the sides of the screw and it still works perfectly when I actually use the correctly sized head.

Re: Spuhr Ring Questions

While we are on the subject, the mount I recently purchased has directions where the first one I purchased did not. The directions say to install the screws with grease or loctite. I did not do this on my first mount and eventually destroyed it trying to remove it because I could not loosen the screws for the rings or the mount. They were torqued to about 22 inch lbs.

I'm assuming the directions are for the blue loctite? Should it be used on the screws for the mount as well and the directions really should have the torque specs for everything on the mount.

If not loctite, what kind of grease?

</div></div> Are you happy with the mounting system? Looks, fit and workmanship?

Re: Spuhr Ring Questions

Definitely! This thing is a hunk of precisely machined aluminum. I think it will definitely hold up to the beating .338 is going to give it. It works so nice on the TRG42 that I'm considering buying a TRG22 and re-barreling to 6XC just so I have matching platforms across calibers. I would definitely recommend this mount over a pic rail with two individual rings. The bubble level is a nice addition too.
