I have an older SR-25 with solid hand guard and 24" unthreaded barrel. I'm thinking about upgrading the hand guard to slotted rail like the Troy or KAC URX. I want to shorten the barrel to 16" - 18" and thread to accept my suppressor. Am I messing up the value or accuracy of this weapon? It has less than 50 rnds through it and is .5 moa but it is long and heavy so I rarely shoot it.

Re: SR-25 Mods

with the release of readily available SR25's your weapon has gone down in value. Do whatever you want with it.

Re: SR-25 Mods

Typically the older 24" models would fetch anywhere from $2500-5000 depending on condition. But since our recent release of multiple models this year it has dropped the value of the older guns a little bit.

However if you do decide to chop the barrel down, I can't stress enough to only let someone who knows what they are doing cut and thread the barrel. I have heard too many horror stories from individuals that did the same thing you are interested in doing with disastrous results.

Re: SR-25 Mods

I say do the mods - anything that will make you happier with it and shoot it more is worth it.

That being said, I also agree with Casey; there are only three people in the world I would let do work on my SR-25 barrels.

Who are they, share please?

Re: SR-25 Mods

I had GA Precision redo my SR 25 Match to basically a clone of the MK11Mod0.... except I had them thread the barrel for a muzzle device. Turned out great... shoots great.

When you shorten the barrel, you lose the necessary pressure to cycle the rifle. In short, the bolt won't go all the way back and strip another round off the mag. It's happened to me a couple of times with an AR-15 and AR-10.

You can resolve the problem in a few ways; open up the gas hole in the barrel, use a reduced power recoil spring, or take turns off the existing recoil spring until the rifle cycles.

I can almost assure you that if you shorten a 24" barrel with a rifle length gas tube to 16" you'll have problems with cycling.

Good point, I'll try it at 20" and maybe flute or dimple the barrel to further reduce weight.

Re: SR-25 Mods

Do the right thing, and put a URX on it. I did, and love it! I also added the PRS Magpul stock, and had the barrel threaded for a Surefire Brake, so I could use it suppressed. I did not want to mess with tuning for reliability, so I left it 24". It shoots MOA with my handloads. It is not a boltgun, so I don't mess with the load much. JPG

Nice, is that the 10 3/4" URX? Do you know the part #?

Re: SR-25 Mods

Wanted to give an update. Sent my SR25 top end to Marvin Pitts. He shortened barrel to 18"' threaded for my suppressor, dimpled barrel and installed a KAC URX. To say I'm pleased is a huge understatement. The accuracy and function is as great as ever and it looks wicked. Very pleased with Marvin, thanks to the board members who recommended him.

If you don't mind me asking, what did the dimpling set you back?
