Movie Theater SR-71 Mystiques

Love these, was actually telling a friend about the speed check one not long ago. Always been completely fascinated with the SR71, would've loved to seen one fly back in the day.

I was some where in the Central Training area of Okinawa back about 1987 or so and heard a loud ass airplane coming in some distance away probably to Kadena.

Looked up had to be a Habu with its unique bad ass outline.

I love looking at the SR-71 at Udvar Hazy, pretty amazing that it was designed in the 60's. My favorite line from Brian Shul when he's talking about the LA speed check story is when he says "and as a 12 year old was reaching for the mic button...." it's just funny to think about. If you get a chance read the book Skunk Works by Ben Rich, there's some really good insights in there about how the design team was recruited and the design challenges they faced with the SR-71. I thought it was fascinating that even though they were operating at 80,000' or so, stuff like cold air to keep the cameras and electronics cool was a finite resource that they had to manage.

A-12 Oxcart to me was "cooler" as I can now read and see more about it.

But yeah thought the SR-71 was the baddest thing going back when I started looking at military jets. Even built one as a model rocket for JR high.

In my opinion the SR-71 is the most impressive piece of engineering we've ever created. Look at the time and the technology available, we were sooooo far ahead of the curve. No we can't all agree on how many genders there are and what restroom to use, bunch of freaking sissy's. I'm glad my grandfather never lived to see this mess.

Incredible engineering effort considering it was designed in the early 60’s, and incredible pilots who flew them.

I was fortunate enough to work in the corporate world for a retired 3 Star who was a U2 / SR driver who later commanded the 8th Air Force. Hands down the best manager / leader I had ever worked for directly, developing complex government comms systems with many challenges. When someone brought up a serious challenge in the development, he would gather all the info, ask about alternative paths, then tell a reeeeeel pucker factor story, like flying across a denied area when one engine “unstarts”, then having RWR scream you got 2 telephone pole sized objects coming at you at twice your speed. Then ask which is a more difficult problem to solve.

Great leader.
