Primary use will be target shooting, my range only goes out to 300 yards but I will be shooting in the hills out to 1,000yds when possible. I may also use this for deer hunting this fall, but may just stick with my .243.
Any other scopes in the sub $600 range I should look at? </div></div>
I have the SS 3-9x42 on a 0 MOA base and shoot out the 678 yards regularly, with no problems. I was able to shoot out to 960 yards the other day and was making hits on a 36"x36" piece of steel, but as others have said, it was more "good enough" than "good" for that distance. There was a little parallax to contend with and 105 gr. AMAX specks were a little hard to make out on the steel, but other than that, it did exactly what it was supposed to and did it well. I would probably opt for the 5-20x50 SS if you're setting the rifle up for 800-1000 yard shooting, but the 3-9 SS <span style="font-weight: bold">will</span> work. </div></div>
That's the kind of info I was looking for. I think 600 will probably be the normal max range, where as 800-1,000 may happen.
Really think I will get the 3-9 for now and if it turns out to not be enough magnification, I will put it on something else and get more power.
Would love to get the 5-20, but want to be shooting this gun soon not in July.
