I was told to save my money and buy a stainless action and build up from that...well i wasnt patient and bought a standard 700p instead. Thats currently what im shooting, barrels been cut to 22", muzzle brake added, aics 1.5 stock, getting ready to add a timney trigger. My question is, am i missing anything by not having a stainless action? i will have a stainless barrel when the stock one is shot out. My current action isnt trued or anything either. Overall its a shooter when i do my part. Just wondering if im really missing anything. Thanks fellas

Other than the obvious SS being slightly more weather resistant it offers no benefit at all function wise and is actually a slightly weaker material.
shoot the shot out of it till you can afford a new barrel and to have the action blueprinted and then a quality finish or surface treatment to protect from the elements

For some reason people have been conditioned to think that stainless steel barrels and actions are more accurate or better.

In reality the choice of 416R CRES vs chrome-moly steels (4140/4340/4150) has absolutely nothing to do with the accuracy potential of your action or barrel.

It's ALL in the heat treatment and machining of those steels.

I went stainless purely because it doesn't rust (as easy). I've had a few rifles develop rust with standard steel barrels (mil-surps, mostly), and it's annoying. Price isn't that much different (if at all in some cases), so why not.

If by chance you'll be cerakoting the works, it's a moot point. I like bead blasted stainless, but 80% of my rifles are coated, a couple on their 3rd paint job??
I'm waiting on C. Dixon's Winchester group buy, blued action, ss fluted barrel. With ss, you can save 200.00 on a paint job!
As for rust, unless you're in a hostile climate, you have to be somewhat of a putz to let your guns rust, sorry. I put a Benelli SBE away in a soft case wet, next hunting season, enough said. Just don't ever entertain the thought of using Navel Jelly to remove rust from a firearm!!!!

Thanks fellas, i was primarly concerned with accuracy potential. You've helped to relieve my annexity. Side note, what does a cerakoting job typically run? Can texture be added to the forend? Im sure this has been covered before, just thought id ask

stainless barrels and stainless actions are quite truthfully a bad combination. Ask me how I know!! Stainless on stainless will stick and or gall, if your not extremely careful.
I buy Chrome moly custom actions almost exclusively. I truly feel that the chrome moly actions are smoother, and I think 4140 is a better steel. lee
