Stainless Steel bolt cleaning problem

So I have a question about the bolt in my Lr308. It's a JP super match stainless steel bolt. I got an adjustable gas block and fired it to tune. Obviously the first few shots were tremendously over gassed, and as a result there was a lot of carbon fouling. (The ammo was Hornady amax). I was able to get the fouling out of just about everything with fireclean, and it just wiped right off. However with the bolt, all of the layers of fouling and gunk came off just fine, but it now appears that the bolt is almost stained black in some areas. It doesn't rise off the surface at all, just discolored. I coated it with fireclean and left it for a week and had no success. The fireclean didn't absorb into the fouling or the bolt, and I'm left scratching my head. Any ideas on how to clean this crap out?

Try using some Flitz I have some nickel boron coated stuff that seems to do what you are describing and with such a nice looking parts it became very frustrating to deal with called the company who did the coating and that is what they recommended.

You will only need to use a touch and it should look like new hopefully.

When cleaning my NIB stuff i go through first and try to get all the big junk off of it and clean the best I can then go over it with the flitz and it looks brand new. best of luck

Yeah all the junk is off of it, it's just like stained. I'll try the flitz, if not Ill try something else either way thanks a bunch guys

This "staining" does it affect function?

Do we baby our rifles by trying to find the best lube to prevent friction, do we stress about the possibility of our coated cleaning rods perhaps wearing the rifling on our precious target barrels?

If so, why apply something abrasive, even a mild abrasive like Flitz, to remove something that is only cosmetic?

Ive learned to live with dirty guns that still have a parts supply chain. If it doesnt have wood it should be beat like a red headed step child.

Stains? You should see my skivvies.


PS - Im guessing sand blasting was a facetious post.
