Stainless Steel Media Testimonials

Re: Stainless Steel Media Testimonials

I have tumbled brass in my Thumlers well over 20+yrs in walnut, Corn cob, lizard litter, saw dust. you name it. There was for sure a lot more impact without water in the tumbler and I never had any issues with the brass work hardening.

As for lubing necks is used graphite in SS balls, but since have switched to using HBN with small SS bearings.

Lube or not the neck tension still plays the major factor.

Re: Stainless Steel Media Testimonials

I called Thumbler's today and it wasn't a big deal.
Sent them the motor I had and for $5.75 I upgraded to the heavy duty motor.
Just have to pay shipping both way's and WAIT.

Re: Stainless Steel Media Testimonials

Cobra I also coat most of my bullets with HBN. As far as necks needing lube I have never heard of any factory made ammo that it is done to, correct me if I am wrong. Also in all the years of using brand new brass I never heard anyone mention the need for it.

Re: Stainless Steel Media Testimonials

I read about using graphite in Zediker's book and that is why I tried it. Seems to work OK for me. The feel of the seating die seems better. I have not done any testing one way vs the other. My SD is pretty good, in the teens, and I am happy with the accuracy, but I certainly can't say this is due to the graphite or not.

Re: Stainless Steel Media Testimonials

Yes, I have seen it. I have already stated that Mark nor I are associated with the site. I will only attest for what Mark sells.

Everyone in the shooting community knows who started the SS media craze and that Mark is the one responsible for many guys being able to use it in their reloading.

This is still America for now! They have every right to sell and do as they wish.

However, I does look bad taking info that others have come up with and stating them as your own. The Lemi Shine addition was dicovered by a Hide member and many other tricks too.

They have made it a business! Mark does it for the pleasure of helping fellow shooters as do I. Everyone that has talked to, met, or has purchased media from Mark will attest to his Character.

Re: Stainless Steel Media Testimonials

Mark will be at Camp Perry for the Long Range matches the first couple weeks of August. If you are considering the SS media just be aware that Mark and I both will be out of touch for the couple weeks. I will respond to emails but the shipping of media will be put off fot those weeks.

Re: Stainless Steel Media Testimonials

Well, took the plunge on this and I finally had everything on hand and was able to give it a go last week. Amazing! Three hour tumble, .40 cal case of lemishine and a squirt (not very scientific) of Dawn dish soap seemed to do the trick on once fired cases for me. Two hour tumble left the cases clean and shiny but the primer pockets weren't quite as clean. One hour tumble (had to try it ;)) left the cases clean but raher dingy looking. Can't really compare to other methods except by hand and home brewed soaking solution. Those methods didn't even come close for me. Thanks to Terry and Mark for coming up with this and sharing with the rest of us. Makes my reloading chores much easier and more enjoyable.

Re: Stainless Steel Media Testimonials

+1 on that. When i desided to order the ss media there was no question it would be coming from mark. He brought it to the masses just as terry has given us all the info on how to use it. Thank you both. I just receaved my media yesterday so now i'm off to buy my tumbler. Care to guess who i will NOT be buying from?

Originally Posted By: suasponte

Yes, I have seen it. No, I have noticed that it has made my brass more consistant than without it. They are all equally clean and with annealing my Chrono numbers and loading practices leave me no excuses at the firing line!

Re: Stainless Steel Media Testimonials

I got a call from Mark the other night that my order was shipping out. We talked for about an hour and half after that.

Mark is a pretty cool cat who has been around the block in military, firearms industry, and police work.

By the way he prefers Ivory to Dawn. :)

I hope the airstream works out.

They want just as much for the media and shipping but I get only 4lbs!
When I got my media from the one and only Mark he shipped a tad over 5lbs for a better total price.
I say stay with Mark and Terry, you can depend on them!

Re: Stainless Steel Media Testimonials

Personally I would never buy from the website being advertised by Badbot. The reason is that anyone who is so unscrupulous as to post a link on a thread started by someone else is in my opinion someone who will steal from me just like they are trying to steal from them.

At least if you have so little moral accountability as to horn in on somebody's creativity, don't try to build your business on them. Just the way I see it!

Re: Stainless Steel Media Testimonials

Found another really good soap for the media. Works great by itself without the need for lemishine.

www.Contenti.com Jewelry Making Supplies sells it. 910 Tumbling Soap Powder. Only 1 to 3 ozs. of powder are needed per gallon of water. Your best choice for burnishing karat gold, brass, copper, bronze, nickel, stainless steel, and most other metals.

Re: Stainless Steel Media Testimonials

910 soap seems rather $$$! $6.50 per 1lb + $5.00 small order fee + $11 UPS S&H = $22.50 per Lb to the door.

Assuming you get 1oz loads with acceptable results that is approx $1.41 per load!
shocked.gif

Lemi Shine, I use a 40S&W Case which is .04oz and Lemi Shine comes in a 12oz bottle for $3.89(I believe)at Wal-Mart. That is 300 loads out of a bottle of Lemi Shine which is for argument sake $0.02 cents per load.

Lemi Shine = $3.89 at any Wal-Mart 300 Loads +/- at $0.02 per load.

910 soap - Only mail order $22.50 per Lb! Assuming 1oz per load at the low end of what they recommend on their site. 16 loads.

Seems like Lemi Shine wins for me.

Is this 910 soap that much better than Lemi Shine and dish soap to make it worth that much???

This is rifle brass not jewelry.

Even adding the 1oz of Ivory into the mix I am still under under $0.15 per load.

I ordered a 1lb box of the 910 soap just to compare and I will post my results versus Lemi Shine when it arrives at the front door.

Re: Stainless Steel Media Testimonials

Alright guys, I have been following this thread from the page 2 or 3 and tried this method. It flat works as well or better than any other method out there. I didn't want to screw with Suasponte's business, as if it wasn't for him, I wouldn't have found this method. BUT, this new "stainless tumbling media" site is overcharging like crazy and now that other people have stolen Suasponte's idea, I had to share:

GO TO www.PELLETSLLC.COM and talk to Kathy (1-800-336-6017), you can get 5 pounds of .265x.040 Stainless wire shot as they call it for less than $25 SHIPPED

It even comes in a Nalgene lab screw top bottle. I have no affiliation with this company, I just did my homework before buying. Yes, its .015 longer than what Suasponte was selling, but I have been using it for months now and it doesn't stick in .223, .308 or any of the other cases I have done. (.219 Donaldson Wasp did need to be shaken)if you contact them, please be nice, as Kathy seems to be a very nice lady. Ask if she will ship it USPost flat rate and she will. I think the company is in New York by the way. I'm just trying to share the love by the way. Do with the info what you will...

edited for some "gramootical" errors and to say that I spoke with Suasponte a couple weeks ago and he didn't mind me sharing the info, I figure posting this info would be a good GFY to the guy with the fancy website.

Re: Stainless Steel Media Testimonials

Just an FYI:

One added benifit that I have noticed with .308 brass is that the tell tail sizing mark on the base of the brass is removed by tumbling with SS media.
With that mark removed and the inside of the case being spotless, it is pretty much imposible to tell if someone is using hand loads or factory ammo.
(In the past, you could pull a bullet and look for carbon in the case or check the base of the brass for a sizing mark.)

This could come in handy if you are going to a range or training environment where it is factory ammo only.

I would also like to echo the sentiment of other posters and thank Terry & Mark for bringing this solution to the masses.
They truely have done so out of their love for the sport and the shooting community.

Re: Stainless Steel Media Testimonials

Just FYI, This is not a business for me. All I have done was posted info and then forwarding Marks contact info for all the people that ask for it. I have no financial gain from any of this at all. Not one person that has purchased this material has sent me $$$ for it, nor has Mark.

Also, Mark made very little from any thing that people got, just enough to pay for the gas to town and Bagging material.

Re: Stainless Steel Media Testimonials

Gents,

I had been thinking about building a Dryer like Terry uses but I just didn't want to sacrifice an Ammo can. So I headed down to my local Ace Hardware and came up with this,

I found a small Galvanized 6 Gallon trash bucket that comes with a pretty tight fitting lid. It is approx. 13" across the top and has a pretty stout bail,
100_0609.jpg

Next, I needed a lamp, fan, and I thought that I would try a Halogen Bulb. So I picked up a 50 watt.
100_0610.jpg

100_0617.jpg

Lastly, a 1'X 2' piece of 1/4" galvanized hardware cloth. Eight 1/2" "L" brackets, sixteen 1/4-24 X 1/2" stainless screws with lock nuts. After a couple of hours and a few beers....
100_0612.jpg

100_0613.jpg

100_0616.jpg

100_0614.jpg

100_0615.jpg

I ran the dryer for six hours and it ran at a very consistent 122 degrees,
100_0607.jpg

I am hoping that this temp. will be adequate. But I may experiment with a higher wattage bulb. The dryer has a pretty large surface area. The hardware cloth sits down inside the pail about 4 1/2" and at that depth the diameter is 12". I figure it will easily hold 250 .223 cases as the lid is also domed. I plan on giving it a go tomorrow. I just need some Lemishine. Ace wasn't the place for that....

Re: Stainless Steel Media Testimonials

Guys

I ran out of dish soap (which wasn't giving me gorgeous clean brass, just clean brass) on Friday.

One batch had the normal 1 TBSP-ish squirt of Palmolive, the other got the dreaded bottle fart with about 1 Teaspoon of soap.

I squirted about 1 TBSP of Cascade Complete dishwasher soap in the container.

Both batches tumbled on the tumbler for the same amount of time, the difference was staggering. Almost like putting Lemishine in it.

I ran 3 more batches over the weekend:

No Dish soap, only Cascade Complete
No Cascade Complete, only dish soap
1/2 Dish soap, 1/2 Cascade Complete

Looks like the best results come with the mix of 2 soaps.

Re: Stainless Steel Media Testimonials

Holy cow!

Sweet drying setup STS. Looks like you can dry a lot of brass in that thing.

So how long did it take to dry your brass? Or did you just turn it on and let it go all night?

Just curious, what the temperature would get up to if you left it out in the sun with just the fan running and the light off.

Thanks for sharing

Re: Stainless Steel Media Testimonials

I'm just walking out and setting it on the edge of the garage roof in the sun. On rainy days it's the oven on it's lowest which is about 175 deg F.

My big question is about the seperation of media from brass. So far I've been dumping the processed mix in a rubbermaid dish washing tub and rinsing the whole works in the tub until the black water is gone. Then I slosh out the media under out of each piece of brass under water. This is a little slow.

I'm thinking about breaking down and buying one of the Dillon seperators. Anyone use one? Is it getting all the media or is some still sticking due to water adhesion?

Is the small dillon seperator enough or do you need the big one?

I use the "small" Dillon. To date I have cleaned thousands of .380, .45, and .308 cases and have had no issues with the SS media being left in the brass.

My technique is to fill the Dillon tub with water so that covers about one-half of the opened basket. I dump the mixed brass and media into the basket and spin it for probably three minutes. I have yet to find any SS media left behind in any of the cases.

Ny issue with the Dillon is that the tub holds far more water than is necessary to accomplish the task of separating the media from the brass. That's why I put quotes around the word small. The Dillon is too big to fit inside my slop sink so I end up having to perform the operation on the floor then heft the tub up and over the slop sink to pour out the water. Sooner or later I'm going to pick it up wrong and pull a back muscle.

If I didn't already have the Dillon from my years of dry, vibratory cleaning, I'd look for something a lot smaller.

Re: Stainless Steel Media Testimonials

I still use my bucket and Frankford Arsenal separator from many year ago! The only thing I have done is cut the bucket in half to reduce the water volume required. I cut it down just enough to allow 2" clear from the bottom of the separator and bucket.

Works like a champ! Just as posted in my original video from over a year ago in the Media for tumbling thread. The Dillon, RCBS, and other type rotary separators will get it done too.

Re: Stainless Steel Media Testimonials

Cleaned some 50 BMG today.

First pic is cleaned with walnut media and lubed, sized, deprimed and at this point I would usually re-tumble to remove the lube.

P1010329.jpg

Primer pockets and insides pretty dirty still.
P1010333.jpg

20 50BMG cases with SS media, 9mm case of Lemishine and a squirt of Dawn.
P1010334.jpg

4 Hours of tumble equals some dirty water.
P1010337.jpg

After I rinse a few times I let some clean water run in the tumbler till all I get is clean water with no soap suds.
P1010338.jpg

Dry them off and then place in tray to be "baked" at 135* on convection.

Thanks. I'm just letting it run all night and it maintains a consistent 122F. I put 240 rounds of 6X45 through it the other day. It worked like a charm. I am Sooo glad to be done with Ultra Sonic cleaning

Re: Stainless Steel Media Testimonials

Well I got my 910 soap in the mail today!

DSC01023.jpg

A little disappointed right off the bat! The directions on the package state 3oz per gallon!
shocked.gif
That is only 5 loads out of a 1lb box that is $6.50 + S&H and the small order fee of $5.

DSC01027.jpg

I got exactly 100 gov't liquidation 1x fired 223 brass that I have deprimed for the test!

DSC01025.jpg

DSC01026.jpg

I will run them tomorrow when I get home! I plan to give them a 3hr tumble just like the Lemi Shine / Ivory soap combo. We all know what that gives us so I do not intend on going there!

Stay tuned tomorrow this time for the results of the 3hr 910 soap tumble!

Terry

Poll results as of 8/17/2010 10:00pm EST

Re: Stainless Steel Media Testimonials

Here are the 910 Soap results! It did clean very well, however I beleive that Ivory/Lemi Shine mix is still superior.

I used the mfg's recommended 3oz's.

1oz of 910 soap!
DSC01028.jpg

3oz's of 910 in the tumbler!
DSC01029.jpg

The 100 1x fired LC 223 brass ready for testing!
DSC01030.jpg

1 gallon water added to the mix! Was like a milky look to the water.
DSC01031.jpg

water nmix being dumped after 3.5hr tumble! Water had like a silvery appreance to it!
DSC01032.jpg

Most all brass appreared to have a water spot issue unlike the Ivory/Lemi Shine mix.
DSC01036.jpg

The inside of the cases all appear to be carbon free.
DSC01039.jpg

Lastly a few primer pockets where still slightly fouled.

STS, wow, that drying bucket is THE TICKET for sure. Class act all the way.

Have you tried just sitting it out in the sun and see how hot it gets?

also it would seem sitting it in front of radiant heater in winter would do the trick as well?

I haven't had it out in the sunshine yet. If we get some sun today I plan on giving it a try. I'm not sure radiant heat would work. That can is pretty hefty. I ran 100 .308's through it last night and this morning the temp in my shop was 60F, the can was at 118F. So far it has been working perfectly.

Re: Stainless Steel Media Testimonials

OK, I broke down and ordered the Dillon 500 seperator.

I've wanted one for about as long as they've made them. BTW shipping is 2x as much when ordered straight from Dillon. Order through Brian Enos and it's half the shipping and still shipped straight from Dillon. NO brainer there.
