Stainless Steel Media

I've ordered a Thumler's Tumbler and am now shopping for stainless steel media. There are so many different profiles I'm a bit confused. I have two questions:

1. What Rockwell hardness is best?

2. What dimension/profile is best?

I'm on the fence about getting the stainless tumbler. The results I have seen here on the hide are awesome. I guess I need to just suck it up and get one.

I'm with you. I don't think it's ever going to end. The more you learn, the more stuff you need. But it's a blast, Literally and figuratively.

Go for the SS and the tumbler. You won't regret it. I've tried everything in 43+ years of reloading, and this combo is tops in completely cleaning all exposed surfaces. Deprime first, and the cases look virgin when done. Words fail. Go look at the pictures in the thread.

Yeah, the stainless media is awesome. It really does make cases look brand new.

I also got mine through suasponte here on the forum and recommend going with him if you decide to give the stainless media a try.

Well, I've gotten all my stuff and have processed a couple batches of cases. I found stainless steel media for a little over $30 shipped for 7 lbs. and a 15 lb. capacity Thumler's Tumbler for a little under $170. My observations:

1. Laundry soap doesn't do too well but Dawn dishwasher detergent does great.

2. Capacity isn't as great as my vibratory case cleaner.

3. It takes longer cleaning (4.5 hours vs 2 hours) with stainless steel media that with the walnut shells but the results are much better and I don't have to spend all that time getting the shell particles out of the cases, flash holes, etc.

There is still a little dark residue in the primer pockets and interior of the cases. It's not bad but not perfect either. Perhaps when I can find some "Leminshine" or whatever it's called, my results will be more toward perfect.
