check out savage...really good shooting out of the box rifle...all you have to do is put a scope on it and shoot it

Rem 700 PSS, SPS $900-$1100, Rem 700 Stainless 5R $900-$1100, I hear the Savages are great out of the box as well. If your lookin to keep the whole package under $1500.oo then check out SWFA and the SS10X42. Great scope and goes for about $300. I have basically the same setup and have NO problems shooting 100-1200 yards.

+1 for R700, nothing else is quite like it as far as being able to customize and work on. It will give you a lot of room to upgrade and play in the future.

If you're getting started into long range shooting I'd get a Remington 700 in .308 and go from there. I don't know for certain what they sell "from the factory" today, haven't looked, but I know there are a number or heavy barreled versions that can get you started.
From there everyone makes stuff to fit it, from drop in stock upgrades to bottom metal and box mags, and if you want to get it worked on every gunsmith in the country works on them.
