In my search for a new rail and rings for my VXIII 4.5-14x40 Tactical, I have been looking at badger and nightforce bases w/ Mark 4 rings. I believe my scope is aluminum and was curious if their would be any down side to having an aluminum rail and rings if the scope tube was also aluminum. Would it be better to have an aluminum tube incase you drop the rife and the only give zone would be on the aluminum tube since the steel rings and base would be stronger? Thanks

I dont take it off a lot. It is used on my .308 700. Im wanting to know if steel mounts will direct the force of a blow or drop to the aluminum tube more than aluminum mounts

Re: Steel Base and Rings Needed for Aluminum Tube?

No they will not, regardless of the material a base and rings are made of they will be much thicker and stronger than the scope itself regarding impact forces. If something strikes the scope, the scope will give first, unless something is overtorqued, stripped, or excessively worn.

Steel is advantageous on the off chance that the ring strikes whatever before the scope, or if you'd like a little extra weight, you r&r your scope and/or rings allot, or your hamfisted and don't use a torque measuring device.
