I finally got around to a picture of the very simple but effective stands we use. Just a 10' length of 1/2" cold or hot rolled steel. 2 90 degree bends 4' in from each edge. Slide a 6"-12" chunk of chain onto the 2' flat and tack in place. Hang the targets via S-hooks. Sharpen the ends of the 2 long sides with a grinder so they'll stick in the ground more easily. They cost about $6:

These work great and are easy to transport. We added a bottom cross bar to help keep them from flexing out when pushed into the ground and then added triangle pieces of steel plate welded to the inside of the legs and below the cross bar so you could stand on them and push them into the ground. This modification added about two more dollars to the project. We used 1/2" round bar but also made some out of some rebar for some friends.
