It's been a long time coming, but I've finally gotten some parts together for a 6.5 Creedmoor build. Stiller Tac-30, Bartlein Heavy Varmint 6.5 1 in 8 barrel, Timney 510U, and Manners T4A mini chassis stock. I've emailed 3 different builders for quotes and lead times, and the rifle will be built by one of these 3. I've read stories about custom actions wanting to bind up when coated due to the tighter tolerances, and that is one of my biggest concerns with this build. I had thought about just having the barrel and lug cerakoted and leaving the action alone, but I'm not sure.
Builder 1 says he'd prefer to cerakote the entire barreled action, and parkerize the bolt, and that the bolt will cycle smoothly.
Builder 2 would rather cerakote the entire barreled action, bolt and all.
Builder 3 wants to Cerakote only the barrel and lug, and wants to leave the receiver alone due to his fear of having binding trouble with the bolt.
All of these gunsmiths are highly regarded on Snipershide and all have built on Stiller actions before. I have no doubt that any of them can build a tackdriver rifle, but this action coating delimma has got me scratching my head about who to send it to. Guys using Stiller actions, What are your thoughts on this?
