Okay, so a few of you already know that I have rifle build in progress . I'm using a Stevens 200 Short Action, in .308. I have already picked out a barrel and muzzle device. Now i am exploring my options for a stock. I have left my budget a little more open on the price but don't want too get ridiculous with the cost. As this was originally a budget build haha

I have recently been looking into the Mcree Precision, and have gotten great replies. Another option would be the B&C Medalist stock with the full aluminum bedding. I still have a nice Laminate stock as an option but have almost dwindled down to the first two.

What are you guys using ans what would you suggest?

Pillar and Glass would be an option for the Medalist and my barrel is a 20" heavy varmint countour.

I was just looking at Stockys for the Medalist, and realized that since it is aluminum bedded from "grip to tip" that there is no need for glas

s or pillars haha silly me!

My understanding is that the A5 has the adjustable comb and cheek peice correct? If that being the case, i can only find that model available for the Remington actions..

The B&C is a nice stock for a "budget build". I have one on my Savage 10FP and for the price I am very happy with it.

I would not waste my time with Stocky's. I have read too many horror stories about them. I bought mine from tactical works out of Colorado Springs.

I ordered mine on a Tuesday or Wednesday and it was delivered on Saturday. That was a total surprise as I did not pay extra for Saturday delivery. I did call and verified that it was in stock before ordering.

Mine is a heavy barrel.

I would definitely have to recommend either a manners or mcmillan stock as i own a couple of both and have also owned cheaper stocks. If you compared a quality stock to a cheaper stock you obviously would feel and see the difference in quality. Plus if your anything like me you will probably end up upgrading again in the future and lose money in the end. Like the post above I have used stockys and agree that i would buy somewhere else unless they are the only ones who have it what you want in stock. There customer service isnt the best...IMHO

The mcree precision will serve you well. No bedding, no inletting for specific barrel contours or bottom metal. Just drop in the barreled action, torque action screws, adjust for comfort, scope up and go shooting.

A number of our club shooters like the Medalist, and with good reason. Pillar and glass will not hurt. If money and wait time are not issues, McMillan gets my vote.

My custom wears an A3, McM factory pillar bedded. The only thing substandard about that rifle is the shooter.

I can honestly say I wasn't looking at Manners or McMillan but I think I will take a look at them. I think I passed on viewing them because nobody has them in stock!

As for stocky's I use them as a reference for price and pictures. I was going to order from MidwayUSA once I picked what stock, be it a Manners, McMillan or the Medalist.

I do really, REALLY like the Mcree, but am having trouble getting a reply from Scott or whoever receives the emails. I am looking for what models come in Savage S/A 4.4" Center-feed and what price/availability.


EDIT: Here is something to put into consideration, will any of these stock choices <span style="font-weight: bold">NOT</span> fit a 20" barrel? The barrel I have on Back Order right now is 20" threaded.

Maybe I shall give calling them a shot than! I am primarily interested in the Medalist and Mcree. McMillan and Manners run the same price if not more than the Mcree and they still need Pillar and Glass

Quick Pole Question: What does a Gunsmith in your area charge to re-barrel your action? (Not completely do a blank, but just slap a good ole barrel on)

I have 3 different Manners stocks and am equally satisfied with all of them. The Manners/Badger chassis system is impressive. The biggest issue with Manners or McMillian is the wait time.

I just received my T4CZ from Manners a week ago...and I put in my order March 1. Brutal...but worth the wait.

I really like the look of the Manners, but I don't know about the price, simply because they all disclaim that Pillar and Glass is advised. Which is a longer wait and more out of pocket cash ;p

I think unless I can get ahold of Scott soon I will probably go with the Medalist. Seems popular, proven and efficient!

Will also need bottom metal if you wanna run a detachable box magazine. Mcree comes ready.

+1 for the McRee. Good service, quality product and Scott is great to work with.

I've also owned McMillan which is also a great product but switched.

Stock should have built in adjustability for length of pull and cheek riser.

With that said, get behind each stock you are interested in and test the fit and feel. Find the one you are most comfortable with in your shooting position. There are subtle differences between your physical structure and the stock that will ultimately effect your shooting.

It's tough to beat B&C stocks when it comes to price! I have a Medalist type 1 on a Rem 700 that is great! It's comfortable, light, and much stronger than the factory stock. I got it from Stocky's and I found them to be just fine. I've ordered other stocks from them as well and have had good experiences every time.

Also, check with Russell at Scout Supply Co. about installing your barrel. He is "SSC" on here. He just completed a build for me and I should be receiving the gun back tomorrow. His prices were very good compared with others I checked with. He was very good about answering all my questions and talking me thru things I was unsure about. Very fast turnaround too!

I too am in the market for a new stock to fit my Rem 700. Leaning toward a B&C although McMillan is still in the running.

As for aluminum bedding blocks not needing "Glass and Pillars", consider this. The block is machined by a CNC machine to "spec" but even then there will be tolerances. The Action is machined on another CNC machine again to "spec" with tolerances. Heat treating is also performed. When the two join up, unless you can select from a huge pile of stocks and find one with the tolerances complementing each other, there will be stresses in the assembled unit.

I added "pillar shims" to my aluminum action block and then bedded the action in Devcon (no "glass" for me thank you). The results were fantastic.

For those who've had experience with both, how much difference is there in the A-5 style B&C's and McM's? I know that either will be better than my "stock stock".

I have a Manners and a B&C and there's absolutely no comparison between the two of them. The B&C is a nice, inexpensive stock, but the Manners is better in every way, however, at a significant premium. It was worth the time and money to custom order a stock exactly as I wanted it from Manners and their mini-chassis is an really good option to consider. I've liked all of the McMillans I've handled, too.

I thought the Mcree stocks came with Bottom Metal integrated? Not that it would be a big deal but I thought the bottom metal was built into the stock and you only had to buy the mags and butt stock (If I were to just buy the Carbine Stock)

Manners are nice, VERY nice. But you are right, at very nice premium. I don't have that flexible of available premium right now haha


I as well understand the differences in tolerances, but didn't think it would be that crucial. I guess I can look into pillars/shims and glass, or Devcon, whichever is available!

How much better did the shims and Devcon make it?

Mcree stocks do NOT require bottom metal or bedding. The design eliminates the need for either of these conventional items.

For my situation, all the horizontal spread disappeared and fliers are almost non existent (except for those that I caused and knew it at the time). The expression "Night and Day" comes to mind when I think of the improvement.

As for the Devcon, I've found it to be far superior to any of the "Glass Bedding" compounds. Once cured it's solid. I use the 10110 putty so it doesn't "wander around" as much as acraglass. For a different color, one can also use Marine Tex which is about the same specs for tensile/compressive strengths. For all my rifles, Devcon and Kiwi Shoe Polish have become my best friends. Even works when fitting a new barrel to an AR-15 Action. A skim coat in the receiver with a well waxed and polished barrel/barrel extension can make a so-so combination shoot a whole lot better.

I think I'll use that "handle" on any future forums I join, "Devcon Guy"

As for how the shims work, best way to explain is to show pictures. Here's a gunsmith's website "tip" that shows it in action. As for me, I made my own "shims from hardened steel washers. Found some with the desired ID, turned them to size, and then made them the desired thickness by working them down on a sharpening stone, checking with mic as I went.

Jp also has a savage chassis for the 4.4 screw spacing. I like it better than the McCree. I had a bc and upgraded to manners. I would do all again. Midway sells the JP chassis.

Hooker - Yeah I am aware of the JP, nice set up but out of my budget by a few hundred haha Which, do you know if you can mount rails on that tube? Just curious, because a continuous top rail is nice looking!

Devcon Guy - hahaha - Thanks for the link! I am going to look into that! I wasn't aware of some of the main differences between Devcon and "Glass". Never looked into too much because I haven't needed too yet.. sadly
