Stock Recommendation

So a little while back, I swapped a rifle with Russell of Scout Supply Company (a class act, by the way. Highly recommended)and had him build be a 260.

It was a stock 700 SPS, but got re-chambered to 260, blueprinted and whatnot, and a 22" Shilen barrel.

I was aware I'd be sacrificing some powder burn and velocity with the 22" barrel, but my idea for this rifle was to have a rifle I'll use for everything on my property that I can stretch the legs on every now and then when I get the room.

Before I went for the total remodeling though I wanted to get my hands on the Hogue stock. I like the feel of the rubber stock, I figured I'd cut out a bit so the barrel stayed floated, and give it a chance to impress me, but it hasn't. It's also not as light as I want. My rifle came in at 9lbs without optics, and while the barrel contour isn't backcountry thin, it's not heavy profile either.

So, any recommendations on a stock that isn't overly pricey that fits what I'm looking for. I can bed it myself, but I just don't know which direction to go. Especially if the BnC hunting models get blown away by the McMillan/Manners class stuff (if ya'll could weigh in on that as well I would appreciate it).

My criteria:

-Light (I'd rather step up long range occasionally with a hunting stock than carry around a tactical stock)

-Around $400

-Will improve accuracy a bit (I don't think that'l be hard after coming off of the rubber one)

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Stock Recommendation

Can I find a Manners in my price range? I'm also fine sticking with the BDL if that matters- in fact, if it keeps it light I prefer it. Light is the goal. I like the HTG, but the "Edge" McMillan models more for that reason. Anyone have experience with those?

Re: Stock Recommendation

I was in the same debate as you are. I found a Mcmillan A5 for a little more in the for sale section. I would say its the best purchase I have made so far.

Re: Stock Recommendation

i have a Manners MCS-T3...had it done in 90% carbon fiber to save weight. My rig is 80% hunting 20% range play...I wanted a helluva stock that was still somewhat light weight. Total rig comes in under 10 pounds...with optics. I paid a bit more than 400, it came in at 550. Without the carbon fiber, it would have been around 480 I think

Re: Stock Recommendation

Colby and HunterH, these are the kinds of replies I was fishing for, but could you expand a little more?

Have you ever spent less on a stock, and can you compare it to the A5 or T3?

Colby, could you tell me a little more about your rifle? That's almost exactly what I was going for, although I think I may be a little on the heavy side with the barrelled action, so I'm trying to make up for it with the stock.

It's not a hard ceiling, but with rifle-related purchases it helps to set my goal low since I almost always break it by a little bit- I'm sure some of you know the feeling. Mainly I just don't want to be having to snag up a new stock with bottom metal for 900 bucks.

Re: Stock Recommendation

I went with a McMillan REM Model 7 stock inletted for the REM 700 for my walking around rifle in 6.5 Swede. I like the pistol gip angle and she weighs about 2 pounds (w/o the barreled action of course). It feels great in the hands and looks great. Should be within or close to your price range. Holds 1/2 MOA or a bit better out to 610 yds so far.

Re: Stock Recommendation

My rifle is a Remington 700 action 280 AI caliber. Changed out the standard barrel to a Broughton 5.5 SS barrel that is 24" long. I wanted a stock that was a "hunting" stock. I only looked at McMillan and Manners. I liked this one because of the classic hunting stock look with the wide fore grip. I could easily carry this gun for miles with no issues. Let me know if you have any other questions. I can email you a picture of my rifle. Just let me know
