Range Report Stock SPS Tact .223 w/ 75gr HPBT Success!!

Went to the range today, after meticulously researching how to build up a load for my only centerfire bolt rifle. Great day for shooting! ~54 degrees, slight wind at times but not an issue after dialing 2 clicks right windage. So, here are my groups!

0.656"

1.173"

1.222"

0.737"

All shot from a Rem700 SPS Tactical .223 with Bushy Elite 4200 Tactical scope from 200 yards. Rifle has had the trigger pull dropped to about 1.5lbs. Everything else is stock.

Load was as follows:

75gr HPBT (HDY)
24.1 gr Varget
2.260" OAL
LC 07 Brass
CCI 400 SR primer

Anyone have any knowledge of a way to measure these accurately? I heard some guy talking about a program he has that scans them in and reports it to you but, he couldn't remember the name.

Adam thinks its a minus sign as opposed to a ~ meaning roughly 54 above.

54deg, oh I wish it was that here! Nice 200yard groups, I didn't think a stock sps would do that.

Nice 200 yard groups, best I could get was 1.25" at 200 but with a non-tactical SPS.

i got my 20 moa base and Burris rings on and re-zeroed. New stock came in so I shot this Friday and got this @ 200yds.

24.7 gr Varget was tighter than my 24.1gr load and I just ordered a chrono from Midway today. Can't wait to stretch this baby out to 1k.

Might go transonic before you get to 1K without a better bullet. Have you tried the 75gr A-Max?

Nice shooting BTW. My SPS Tactical averages a wee bit over 1/2MOA with the 69gr SMK ahead of Re-15. I did get some pretty decent results with Varget and 68gr Hornadys though.

Yes, I have tried the Amaxs. 1:9 twist can't do squat with em. I don't have a recipe that gets them fast enough to stabilize in this twist rate. I am currently waiting for some 69gr SMK, 70gr VLD, and some 75gr VLD to try out. You think those are good enough? I never have shot that far so I dunno what they'll do.

You’re going to like every thing about the 70 vld except the price...

When you get your crono, I am interested in seeing if your loads jive with mine. The 75 and 77 BTHP's I’ve launched are slow compared to book velocity's with varget and r15, this out of a sps tactical as well.

I'll keep you posted on what I find when I get it. How many rounds should I be shooting on average to get an idea of muzzle velocity? I was thinking about loading about 10rds of each load I shoot in each firearm and doing 5 shot strings. 10 seems like a good number to help with the confirmation of what the first 5 show. This sound ok?

Thanks. Most of it is. I try to group them by year of production. I use a group of about 50 pieces of PPU brass too. All fired range pickups that once I get ahold of, only go into the Remy. After that, all neck sizing until the bolt won't open. Never had that happen yet since I seem to be OK on pressure each firing, ie- not much stress on the brass.

Sounds fine, 5 to 10 is what I generally shoot over my crono during load development.

Perforator, My sps tactical loves the 69 Matchking. I've shot it with 4 different powders, in and out of the lands. It doesn't really matter, they all go into tiny groups. Nice choice on scopes, by the way, I have two of them. Calibration is a little off, but that can be adjusted for. 1 click on mine = .27 .vs the standard .25. Keep this in mind when you start shooting at distance, if your numbers don't add up.

NICE rifle. I too have noticed that it doesn't seem to matter to this rifle where the bullet is seated. Kind of nice to have I guess, eliminates one variable from the equation. I love this little rifle and the .223 is so cheap to shoot I get in plenty of range time. I was lookin at the rifle basix triggers. Where is the best place to grab one?

ps- What's your 69smk load? I have some on hand from a member here and I'd like to try another load.

I shot the 69 grainers and got the following after pressure workup. I got no pressure signs at all really. Slight cratering on primers of a few but all still had radius intact on edges. No flats.

What kind of numbers did you get?


24.8 gr Varget averaged 2896 fps
25.0 gr Varget 2928 fps

I havn't shot 69's for a year or more and cant locate my old notes, but 70 vlds are running



24.8 varget adv 2770fps
25.1 varget adv 2823fps
26.0 varget adv 2929fps

These are HBN coated and that may be way they are a lower velocity for the charge weight compared to yours. They were in new brass and bullets seated into the lands, 2.32ish if I remember right.
