hey guys i was wondering if there was anything i could do to stop a .300 mag bullet wile sighting in my rifle.Iwas wondering if a 1/2 inch piece of steel for part of my backstop would slow it down. im sighting in at 100yrds.

Re: stopping a .300 win. mag.

Don't think I would shoot at steel at 100 yards. May come back at you.

PS Fill out your profile others will be quicker to help you out if you do so.

If you can get a bore sighter and bore sight it at 25-30 yards you should be on a sheet of paper at 100 yards. You can get one
at wally world for less than 20 dollars, or a gun shop should have one and do it for you.

As far as shooting at steel with a highpower rifle. I wouldn't shoot any closer than 200 yards. Unless you have alot of slope to throw the bullet in the earth.

safty first don't need to get hurt shooting

Re: stopping a .300 win. mag.

Dirt and lots of it. Sand would be even better.

Let me ask the dumb question; Where are you shooting, in the parking lot of a Mall? Hehehee had to ask.

On a serious note, I've seen a .308 almost go through a half inch of Steel. I would say the steel with sand on both sides would do the trick, but if your worried, and with the potential of a riquochet, maybe you should go to a range. *shrugs*

no im in the middle of a hayfield. but the ground here has alot of shale stone and im always hearing the stone bust apart and ricochey also i forgot to mention the face of my target is 3/4 inch plywood there a hill that goes 100yrds uphill then about 3 miles of hardwoods beyond that. im just trying to find the safest way to shoot my rifle. the steel i was talking about is in the back of the target im using.

Re: stopping a .300 win. mag.

a .300 win. mag. will penetrate 1/2" plate even at 200 yards.

get someone to blade you up a berm with a cat. thats the safest deal.

good luck.

Re: stopping a .300 win. mag.

Not sure if a ricochey would or wouldn't come back through a 3/4" sheet of plywood. If you have a earth hill as you metioned and no body can get between the target and the hill you should be fine. If there is alot of yardage between the target and hill move your target to the base of the hill. Maybe after a few rounds throught the target look at the hill to see the impact and pick up as many rocks as you can and maybe place a couple of sand bags on top of the impact location.

Re: stopping a .300 win. mag.

Yea I know what you mean. I can shoot out to 300 yards at home and I mean right out my front door. But I need a dirt berm badly. The backstop is just a lot of thick woods. I have no worry of a bullet getting through it. Put if someone shoots over the tree line who knows. The land is in the family and I have permission to shot there just need to get it oked to build the berm. I have become a member of the local range so I do have a safer place to shoot.
