This past Thursday my son and I picked up our new rifles;
Surgeon RSR
Krieger 5R .308 11.25 twist
Manners T5-A stocks with Mini-Chassis

I have had a whole bunch of Krieger barrels over the years probably somewhere between 15-20 on BR,Varmint and hunting rifles but I have never had oned before that did not show some copper fouling for at least 10 rounds.

When I cleaned after the 1st round this barrel showed no copper fouling at all.

My cleaning regimen is 3 patches of BBS, bronze brush, 1 patch with BBS and then dry patches.

Since there was no copper fouling, I went to a 5 shot string and cleaned. Still no fouling.

Now that my scope was where it was supposed to be I shot 20 rounds, cleaned and still now fouling.

I then fired 40 rounds and got a little copper on my third patch with BBS. After I finishid my cleaning, now 68 rounds total, and still just a touch of copper I didn't believe what I was seeing, so I cleaned again with Hoppe's copper remover. No Copper fouling.

Granted Krieger makes a fantastic barrel, and granted my PTG reamer was new, and my rifle smith is and has always been phenomenal, however, I have never had this experience with a barrel of any maker in the past.

Has anyone else had this kind of experience?

Re: Strange experience with new barrel

Many fine rifle barrels will show little copper fouling after extended shooting sesions. I generaly run Rock and Schneider barrels, I will go between 100-300 rounds between cleaning and they still clean up easily, and show little to no copper fouling when new.

You have a great barrel, enjoy !!!!!

Shoots good. BH 175 avg right at .500. FGMM 175 in the lower .4s. If I can get rid of the Vertical dispersion groups should shrink .050-.100. It's either my poor bag handling or me missing the wind gusts in my face.

Re: Strange experience with new barrel

Sounds like a major problem if you like to spend time cleaning.
I've seen their barrels soak in MX after many more shots without signs.
Main dirt was carbon where we may think the copper would be.
Might get a little copper sometimes, but not much.

i did run a brush, and some patches down mine the day i got it.....but only because i could see something in the barrel....turned out to be a dead bug

Re: Strange experience with new barrel

Bore scope it and see if keeps fouling in the same area. It could have a defect in the steel that after shooting it is showing up.

Re: Strange experience with new barrel

This is what changed my mind about break-ins. I started to break in a new L-W barrel, and after 7 rounds simply could not find any more copper fouling.

That's just horrid. Ill trade you my barrel. Shoot 50 rounds and you can clean for an hour at the least.
