I figured this wasn't quite tactical enough to go to the equipment section.

I am looking at picking up a new netbook for school and field use, and I was wondering if anyone has found a sturdy netbook in the 300-400 dollar range. I have a desktop replacement for working or video editing so I don't need the netbook to be extremely fast.

Ive seen the "rugged" ones that are for kids and I'm not impressed. I might get a refurbished HP 5101 (aluminum case/magnesium frame) but they come with xp or vista, and I want windows 7.

Im not planning on beating it up but I would like to use it for running ballistics programs at the range or in the desert, so good battery life is important, maybe like 6+ hours.

Any recommendations? Ive had good luck with Toshiba but I'm looking to see what else is out there.

Yeah the solid state seems like it would be a good choice, some of the other laptops have "drop sensors" to shut off the spinning HD before it hits the ground, but I don't have experience with either type. Maybe SH forum users don't use netbooks? we have 9 pages of Droid stuff and Im not sure how many pages of Kindle/Nook stuff... Ill keep looking.
It seems to me like the complaint most people have about PocketPCs or Droids is you cant enter data fast enough to use in a competition to get an updated firing solution... a netbook should be much easier I think.

before you trip on your dick.....most folks don't schlepp around a puter other than a hand held device.....the nomad being the most usefull.....others roll with DTAC cards or some other non-battery system that only needs a number generated to get the "DA"......then its up to the trigger yanker to get it all into the winners circle
