I have searched far and wide and the best I have found so far is someone took apart a 338LM subsonic and the powder looked like trail boss (which makes sense). I am looking to duplicate this with a 300SMK in the Edge but am a little worried about detonation that you hear about with fast powders in low charges. I know trail boss was designed with that in mind but 338 edge is a lot bigger case than trail boss was originaly designed for. Soo what do you guys think should it work ok by itself, should I use some filler material? If so what? Should I abandon all hope (no). Is there a better option? Thanks in advance.

Re: Subsonic 338 edge

The problem with SEE (Secondary Explosive Effect) is for very underfilled cases, like 30% of volume.

My starting point would be to take the known TB load for 338 LM, the known water capacities of the 338LM and 338 Edge

IE

For the sake of easy math in the example let's say that the 338LM used 20gr of T-Boss under a 300SMK for SS loads.

338 LM holds 100gr of water, 338 Edge holds 120gr of water (I know these numbers are all BS, don't focus on that, focus on the method)

120gr/100gr = 1.20

1.20 * 20gr = 24gr of TB to start.

I've used that method to approximate starting loads in reduced capacity and full bore cases several times with Red Dot, Unique and Trail Boss. Never for a 338 LM sized case, but it worked well on a 30-06 from a 308 which is about the same ratio IIRC.

Use that to find a starting point.

EDIT: Take the can off to do initial load testing to make sure the bullets are coming out of the bore, and that they're also coming out stable so you don't get baffle strikes.
