I know shot placement is critical for humane kills specialy with sub load deer hunting, anyone have experiance hunting deer at 100-250 yard distances using 308 with 185g bullets in sub loads with 400ftb of energy find high sucess rate with humane kills without need for follow up shot, ifso could you share your findings, thanks.

Re: subsonic loads for deer hunting.

Sir,
If you are not poaching or shooting on dep permits or in a city, why would you do this? It will work sometimes. Sometimes it will not. If the deer is aware you are there and disturbed, it will run and likely not be found in a timely mannor, if at all. Trajectory is high so EXACT range must be known. I would be illeagal in most areas for hunting. Most areas have ME requirements for game hunting, not just cal restrictions.
Where are you located? Fill out your profile.

Re: subsonic loads for deer hunting.

Done it with several calibers. It's very useful for herd culling or removing animals per the request of a township that doesn't want its more "sensitive" residents disturbed by gunfire.

Headshots at close ranges are the most effective way to do this, I've seen the best result with heavy, wide meplat bullets as they tend to drill deep penetrating holes.

A suppressed, subsonic 45/70 would be an awesome caliber to do it with, as well as 458 SOCOM, 450 Bushmaster, etc.

Turn those 185's backwards in the 308 case and launch them that way, they penetrate better and will have higher stability margins.

It's also very useful for removing animals like hogs where they tend to scatter at the first shot. Using a very heavy bullet like a 500gr pill in 45cal it's a great way to drop several before the rest figure out something is going on.

Re: subsonic loads for deer hunting.

yea, i have developed a accurate 1in at 100y load with n320 using the Lapua molly 185g scenar which gives 400ftb at 100y and 360ftb at 200y, might try and cut x into tip to aid expansion but feel accuracy will be good enough for heart-lung shots out to 100-150y

Re: subsonic loads for deer hunting.

Back in the day we did it to shoot does off the food plots during the normal firearm season because there were paying hunters so we did not want to disturb the herds to much.

I don't remember the load but we used 220 grain roundnose bullets. With good shot placement, it killed them just fine up to 100yds but expect most of them to run into cover and lay down. Further was pretty iffy IMO so I would just make sure we were close.

Re: subsonic loads for deer hunting.

Wont be using sub load beyond 140y distances, Acuracy and retained energy suficant for humane dispatch if i do my part at trigger, I notice some bow hunters are hunting deer with 25ftb kinetic energy when they hunt deer, would imagine humane kill rate nowhere near as high as hunting with rifle though unless at very short distances.
