good day to all,
this is my first post as well as bieng a newbe to long range. i have wanted to get into this for a couple of decades and now im here. the last time i shot any kind of "lr" was in jrotc in high school. i just bought a browning a-bolt stainless target heavy barrel in 300 wsm, 8-32x56 lrmoa sightron scope, leupold rings & mounts, shooter ridge rockmount bipod. everything on the rifle itself is stock from browning. i want to know what would be some good upgrades ie. stock, trigger, you know.?? also,as the rifle only came with 3 round cap. can i change that?? go easy on me... i dont know all the lingo either (im trying) so please try to explain in laymans terms. picture is on brownings site of rifle and i will try to get a picture of mine up asap.

Re: suggestions for upgrading new a-bolt target

Good upgrades would be to sell it and buy a Remington or even a Savage. There is much, much more you can do with those platforms. If you're just learning, the 300 WSM is a VERY poor choice.

Re: suggestions for upgrading new a-bolt target

Agreed.

If you had asked for recommendations before purchasing, I would also say research a LOT before you buy, and don't outspend your ability.

But now that you're where you are, let's go from there.

DO NOT SPEND ANY MORE MONEY ON ANYTHING OTHER THAN AMMO AND RANGE FEES

Since your last bit of precision shooting was in high school, you just need to buy some ammo and range time, and just practice.

Watch some Youtube videos on how to properly mount a scope to a rifle, and that's IT for upgrades any time soon. Your rifle will be able to outshoot you for quite a long time. Stocks, trigger, etc, is all WORTHLESS to someone who can't tell the difference yet.

Re: suggestions for upgrading new a-bolt target

thank you.
i had heard alot of good things about it "before i started watching/reading these forums. unfortunately i had already purchased it. i had the scope mounted before i took it home. now i will say that this is a big upgrade from my 22-250. i have put about 360 rounds down it after my initial break in and sighting it. practicing at 100yds. the range i have been going to has a gong at 500 and i repainted it so i could see. i put 3 in 1 1\2" circle two times, so i dont think it did so bad. i try to stay at 100 for practice though. im sorry i didnt get to this site earlier... i just thought that i should get something that is accurate out to 1000 and work my way to it rather than spend more than i did for my first. i shoot alot of pistols in high cal. so the flinching doesnt come along too often. mostly a glock 31 (357 sig) i agree that i should have gotten a savage or the likes though knowing what i know now about upgrades. live and learn.

Re: suggestions for upgrading new a-bolt target

Stick with Remington or Savage for LR. and you can do just about anything you want to it. The other problem with the A-Bolt is that it is very hard to find a Smith that will re-barrel it. About 50% of the time the action will break while trying to remove the old barrel. The X-Bolt does not have that problem. But if I were you I would sell it and get one of the other two mentioned.

Re: suggestions for upgrading new a-bolt target

There is virtually no aftermarket whatsoever for the Browning A-Bolt. Keep it stock, leave it as a fudd gun and start your LR journey from the beginning all over again. Although, McMillan is inletting their A5 for the a-bolt action now..albeit with less options than their normal offerings.

Re: suggestions for upgrading new a-bolt target

You can sell it right here on the Hide after you get 100 posts. Or you can put it in the paper or word of mouth at work. Well Im not sure what California Laws are. But you could find some one to sell it to by word of mouth.
