Summary of the long range fad.

So who here has masked all their precision guns as bump stocks so they can easily turn them over and taken up golf, knitting, or a role in Brazilian fart porn because of this thread?
I’m leaning heavily toward the latter. I think being the fluffer that feeds them beans between sets and takes in the first few farts of the day like a bong hit to clear their plumbing of any shart chunks would be fucking exhilarating.

I see this from a somewhat different viewpoint. I think much of this topic has turned into much ado about nearly, but not quite, nothing.
Like LL, I've been here since the beginning (actually a bit longer, there was a predecessor site, named "The LowLight Directive"), and Frank is spot on about this.
I have no problem with the OP premise. A Near Newb has rendered a viewpoint, and that's fine; but not all viewpoints see the subject in its broader scope.
Everyone has a viewpoint, and here's mine. Folks have been stretching the maximum effective range since our cutting edge discipline perfected the Atlatl (a fine killing implement in it's own rite...).
People come to the table and leave, always have. But the table has always been there; it's a basic part of human nature to "want more".
Since my arrival here, I've seen a huge evolution in all aspects of precision shooting at extended distances; enough to know that the likes of myself went obsolete here about a decade or so ago. But that's OK, I'm not trying to ride the cutting edge, and that edge makes me proud because somewhere back in the dimness of time, I know I made my contribution to the advancement.
I feel I still have a role here, and it's much the same as it's always been. I speak mainly to the newer LR shooter. I stress basic skills and basic implements because I think they play a central role as the foundation for advancement.
Simple ways are easier to learn and harder to forget, although we all, myself included, are prone to such forgetting. When I do, I know my basic rifle is still around to help me get my edge back. It never left, and it's not my trainer; I have no actual trainer, my main implement plays all the tunes.
I seldom part with a rifle, but I do update the accessories because they allow refinement in what I do.
Jumping onto the trolley and immediately demanding perfection in oneself and one's gear is very common around here. It's also very unnecessary.
The best bow and arrows in the world will not make an impatient Indian into Nimrod. First we crawl, then we walk, and most of us get to run, eventually.
Skip the first two at your peril. Ya gotta start somewhere, and at the beginning isn't such a bad place for that.

FYI, I was writing in Precision Shooting in the 1990's and had two articles in the inaugural issue of Tactical Shooter. Frank invited me here at the beginning, and it's been my sole outlet ever since. But that was in another century, and I was another me.

I just meant when you write about anything shooting. Once in a while you let the trolls have more influence than they should.
I see this Long Range stuff a lot like Golf (only cheaper 
).
If I hunted I would want to develop my tracking/stalking skills to take short shots, but I like long lenses for photography and long barrels for paper.
I'm much older than my shooting skill set but strive to beat my performance each time I go to the range.
I also want my results to be due to me getting better, not store bought.
It's a challenge. Getting better is the goal.

A lot more money in golf is wasted on prestige, rather than ability. That in itself costs a ton. Which brings to mind, a golf course is a great big waste of a good rifle range.
Can you see now why it's Better to hit "delete". It's discerning early on the approaching onslaught vs defending a flawed viewpoint.

Well reading this was a fun way to burn up a Friday afternoon conference call. There are some funny mofos here glad I was on mute I was howling out loud a few times.
Don't know squat about LR shooting, but am so excited at developing a new skill set with a rifle. I enjoy learning how things work and then doing my best to apply it. Hunting is becoming increasingly boring sans thermal hog/yote(THAT is some fun stuff), but I do like a freezer full of venison so always gotta drop a couple for the grill. Having said that shooting at steel is by far my favorite aspect and the LR bug has tugged at me long enough I'm finally going to do it in 2019. My inclination is that hunting will fade and LR shooting will take it's place as the primary focus. If I get the time maybe even hand loading. I don't know if I'll ever give up thermal that's like the mafia....in for life. This is my last year sitting in trees though.

Hunting is more about getting up early and enjoying being outdoors. The older I get the more I enjoy hunting and fishing (salt). Breaking day is my favorite time of day. I feel sorry for the people that never get to experience anything like that.
Deer hunting has just lost it's lustre for me it's just too sedentary sitting motionless for hours on end. Fishing however is my #1 passion always will be good on ya! Gulf coast of FL inshore snook, reds and tarpon...permit on occasion when they aren't too far offshore. Annual summer fly fishing trip to BC all dries for Cuttys and Bulls. I could fish every day the rest of my life and not tire of it. I hear you though b/c sitting in the woods when everything comes to life is neat. Owls start their song, then turkeys get fired up, hogs get riled up they have a definite orchestra going on.
I always did like the breaking day as the best part of either hunting or fishing. Even in fresh water, having the fog lift at dawn and the sounds and sights of the animals is an experience that cannot be completely described.
Most places require you to pay for entertainment. Here its free. I know there will always be some stooges but I like to party so sorry if I had too much fun.

Not to pile on but, WTF?! I don't even understand the OP's point. I have been a shooter of all manner of firearms since 8 and I am a few months from 50 now. I have been a competitive shooter for 20 years in a lot of disciplines and every year I add another with no end in sight. Marksmanship, interior, exterior and terminal ballistics, and gunsmithing, are FASCINATING areas of study irrespective of hunting, which is also FASCINATING. Why try to pit one against another? I don't get it.
I think that he’s pretty much admitted that he was trolling for a lot of responses, and he succeeded. Like that or not, you have to admit that it has been entertaining.
Long Range shooting a fad? Nope. People have been shooting long range for generations, and will continue to do so.
Okay, having spent a large amount of time thinking about this...about 2 minutes total..., I can see how there could be a perceived increase and then an eventual ebb to the current popularity of shooting long range as a sport. I don’t think that it has started yet, so bear with me a second or two.
If you are older than high school age you may remember how in the mid-nineties golf began growing in leaps and bounds. Golf courses became a hot way to sell new sub-divisions to the masses. Golf course homes were a sure fire investment and often increased in value substantially before they were even completed for move in. Then, at the peak, there was Tiger Woods, golf sponsorships were gold.
Then there was a cooling off, followed by a crash in golf popularity and subsequently in the value of those golf course homes. Many subdivision golf courses shut down and were then turned into more houses. That is still going on.
There are still more golfers now than there were before the rise in golf popularity, but the rise (or fad, if you will) is over for now. It is possible that the long range shooting sport is experiencing a similar rise in popularity and could at some point experience a similar ebb, once the polish has worn off for some the newbies.
Will it go away completely? Not likely, as long as we are able to individually own the rifles needed to participate.

That's kind of how I was thinking too. I mean it was only a 22, but I was stretching that thing out as far as I could as a little kid. Only thing that changed was I started shooting bigger caliber and went from squirrels to steel
The game has been changed. The entire bell curve of shooting and hunting enthusiasts is moving . This isn’t IMHO the trailing edge of fad, this is the early/middle stages of a migration. There are several factors that, I think, are fueling this migration. I’ll throw a couple out there for commentary:
Lack of access to hunting land, and increased competition.
Better and cheaper products.
Better companies supplying products.
Increased knowledge base, and erosion of ignorance.
Changing social structure and values.
Duplicatable results.

I can attest to that as the lease is still there, but it's so expensive it literally came down to the last minute to find enough people to secure it. This is likely the last year as the land is being sold to a developer if in fact it hasn't already been completed.
I wasn't trolling...just had a lot to drink and thought it would be fun to party. I joined this site to have fun and I see a lot of other guys have too...I am more into hunting than shooting so that obviously biased the op. I have learned a lot from here that I can apply to hunting. On the other hand I don't agree that hunters cant teach shooters something. At least they can emphasize to make the first shot count. And as always the entertainment is free...where do I go to post jokes?
I think you might like Reddit a lot if you enjoy getting a rise out of people and 'fun to party' commentary. I've had a few links sent to me over the years from that place it's a trip.
