Suppressors Suppressor Durability?

Ok, I have never bought a suppressor before, and my only experience with them is shooting my friends Tiger Shark a few times, therefore, I apologize for any ignorance that may ooze out of my mouth in this thread. So, to the point, I had my rifle built with a Surefire suppressor installed. I really like it as a brake, and now I'm thinking about purchasing the suppressor to go on it. My good friend is a Surefire dealer, and he has given me a price for one. However, before I drop over a grand on this suppressor, I was wondering how durable suppressors are in general, with the most emphasis on the FA762SS Surefire. What is the typical round count expected for the life of a suppressor, and can it be sent in to be cleaned or have the baffles replaced once it starts to wear out? Sorry if that is a completely stupid question, but I have absolutely no personal experience with suppressors. I have searched the forum and couldn't quite find what I was looking for.

Thanks In Advance,
Troy

Re: Suppressor Durability?

If you got quoted for a SF for a grand, you are stealing it from him!
They will last longer then you think, you probably wont be able to shoot enough to wear it out. Really depends on the cartridge being used and barrel length.
Centerfire cans dont really need to be cleaned but you can use "the dip" at home and clean them enough, no need to send that in.

Re: Suppressor Durability?

Ok, sounds good. I was quoted over a grand, but it's still well below retail. It is good to hear that I probably won't wear it out though. I usually shoot in one long range competition a month with a few range visits thrown in between.

Re: Suppressor Durability?

I did look that up, and Surefire has a lifetime warranty for factory defects, and not if it just wears out. I was mainly wondering if I noticed it to start wearing out if I could send it in to be repaired or "cleaned" without having to buy a completely new one later down the road.

Re: Suppressor Durability?

I wouldn't worry about it wearing out. I have never seen or heard of one of our suppressors being "shot out". I know my 556 can has at least 7K rounds through it and my 762 can that I shoot all the time has a few thousand and honestly the only issue with my 212 is the finish is baked after shooting it red and then someone melting my sling on it.

Re: Suppressor Durability?

I promise you that on a quality can if you ever actually shoot enough to wear it out, well you will be thrilled to have an excuse to send it in for a rebuild. It takes a great number of rounds.

Re: Suppressor Durability?

Shooting out a centerfire rifle can takes a very high round count.
For most cartridges I would say North of 10K.

Many manufactures will "Rebuild" their suppressors if and when they wear out.
The cost of this is typically only 1/4 of the price of the can.

Bottom line, it isn't worth worrying about.
Buy the suppressor, shoot the suppressor, and get ready to by more suppressors / mounts...

They are very addicting!

+1 I guess there are worse addicting things to splurge on.

I may be wrong, but I don't believe this is correct. My understanding is that the only thing that can't be replaced is the tube/registered portion of the can.

Well.... how would you replace the baffles on a fully welded core, one that is welded thru the tube?

Not the point. That is a function of design, not law. While it may not be possible/feasible, it isn't prohibited by law to replace the baffles if it is technologically possible.

Re: Suppressor Durability?

I did some research and the manufacturer of the suppressor CAN alter the can as long as the serialized portion (the tube) is not altered.

If it is a form 1 can the person in possession of the stamp can replace baffles due to damage but must destroy the damaged parts. And replace with exactly what they sent in on their plans.

Actually, Auburn used to have a legitimate NCAA shooting team in the 70's and maybe 80's? but we are in the process of building that back up. Right now, we are in the process of getting it approved through the student government association (and its looking good thus far), and from there we will more likely be a shooting club rather than a sanctioned shooting team until we can gather up as many committed individuals as we are.

Re: Suppressor Durability?

It would be awesome for au to get a high power team together. Plenty of great places to shoot across the course near auburn. We had a match this morning in pensacola. You have matches near benning every month.
