Suppressors Suppressor on a Muzzle Loader

I do most of my large game hunting with a 50 cal muzzle loader. It would be nice to have a suppressor on my muzzle loader. I was wondering if anyone had ever done this before. It would need to be quick detach to make reloading easier. Is the powder too dirty? would it still shoot sabots, or would it need to be an actual 50 cal bullet? Just thinking out loud and wanted your ideas.

Re: Suppressor on a Muzzle Loader

It wouldnt even be worth it as most 50 cal cans are extremely large and heavy. A QD 50 cal can from AAC is 5lbs and 18" long. I wouldnt not want to pack that around. The black powder is going to be extremely messy, you will have a ton of smoke coming out of the can for a few minutes.

I would nix the idea.....

Re: Suppressor on a Muzzle Loader

BP is also HIGHLY corrosive.

There are work-arounds for weight and the smoke sucks but if you're just after suppression of noise I guess that's no big deal.

The extremely corrosive nature of BP residue is why I wouldn't even entertain the idea.... as cool as it would be (thought about doing it myself)

Re: Suppressor on a Muzzle Loader

Yeah, I figured as much, but thought it would be interesting to see one.

I guess it could probably be built lighter if it was built only for a muzzle loader (lower pressures).

If it could be disassembled, then it could be cleaned.

If the outer tube was permanently attached to the barrel, and the muzzle loader is not actually considered to be a registered gun, then would the suppressor need to be registered?

Re: Suppressor on a Muzzle Loader

Realizing this is a pointless post reply, DO IT! I am almost willing to come to TN to clean the mess just to know you are making this happen. I have long pondered a lightened 458 socom can on a Sharps cartridge rifle...

If you do muzzleload with the can, make sure to NOT use sabots or patching or I am sure you won't like the results. Unless you made a Form 1 can with a sleeve like a home-roll shotgun can (think Metro barrel with outer sleeve).

Please keep us posted if you pursue this.

Re: Suppressor on a Muzzle Loader

I'm just pondering and wishing. I wouldn't know where to begin to build a suppressor. I don't have machining skills or equipment, but I do think it is an interesting topic of discussion.

If it suppresses the fired round in any way, has baffles or alters the firearms sound signature then YES it's a suppressor and you would have to register it with the NFA.

I would hang this one up. Not gonna get the results or loading capabilities with a can on it.

The suppressor laws are written based around the idea of a chemical reaction releasing the energy for projectile propulsion. Given tat BP actually burns I suspect that they're going to say "No way, Jose. Register it"

Something to write a proposal letter to the JBT's about and ask.

Lol. Yeah they would probably try it. That show is a joke.

Re: Suppressor on a Muzzle Loader

I would be afraid of the powder getting in between the baffles and causing a second "bang". I would be more apt to try it on a inline black powder gun Vs. a traditional muzzle loader.

Re: Suppressor on a Muzzle Loader

You could do this with a smoke less muzzle loader. You would use a quick detach can and bore out the mount so that you could place the bullet into the muzzle without damaging it. The hard part would be making a starter to work with the mount because even after boring it out you wouldn't have much room to work with. If you are interested in looking at some smokeless muzzle loaders try richards custom rifles. He is retired but you will get the idea of what I am talking about from his website. It can be done just not very easily.
