According to early news reports the shooter in Va Beach used a suppressed 45 pistol to kill 12 people. Witnesses said they thought the gunfire was further away since it was not loud. CNN is doing a story now about suppressors and how they should not be legal.

Although legal in Virginia, local city ordinance banned them in Va Beach. Sources say weapons were legally purchased but they have not specifically addressed the suppressor.

Yes, most perhaps, but not all. I know and have done business with several class 3 dealers here in VA that don't or didn't have formal store fronts. I have also run into a few at the local gun shows that don't have storefronts, but do the shows, transfers and class 3 stuff. I don't remember if any of them are in va beach proper (might have been neighboring cities/counties) but they are out there. There might also have been more in years past (during the Obama boom a few years ago) than today (skewing my view of the out-of-their-house dealers)

Virginia doesn't regulate silencers at all nor does any locality within the Commonwealth. We also have preemption meaning localities cannot make firearms regulations more strict than state law with very few exceptions. Since Virginia doesn't even have a definition for silencer, no law can be made at the local levels.

Fair point. I'm not as funny as I think I am. Bump stocks are a fresh wound for our community. I will add that with silencers being specifically defined under the NFA would require a legislative response to ban as opposed to bump stocks which were subject to an administrative reclassification.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist but it's interesting that after the Las Vegas shooting of 2017, the "firearms experts," Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine want to ban suppressors. Keep in mind that suppressors had nothing to do with the shooting in Las Vegas but Clinton and Kaine decided to pee their pants in public over those devices.

Clinton and Kaine didn't get any traction on their calls to ban suppressors. What they needed was an actual shooting involving a suppressor.

Like I said earlier; I'm not a conspiracy theorist but everything about this case makes me suspicious. Go back through the history of mass shootings in this country. They almost always seem to happen whenever there is any pro-gun legislation making its way through the legislatures.

The 2020 election is quickly approaching. The bump-stock ban aside; at the NRA convention, Trump vowed to protect our gun rights.

The anti-gunners need another tragedy to bolster their calls for more bans and make DJT look bad. They also need to target another so-called "evil" firearm accessory.

Keep in mind they might be getting worried about the Kettler case. Suppressors are extremely popular in this country; more than before the passage of the NFA of 1934. IMHO, I think they are worried about the SCOTUS overturning the NFA.

Why would they be worried? Just look at the Heller and Macdonald cases. The SCOTUS is also set to hear the case out of NYC involving the carriage of firearms in that city.

RBG is probably blinking once for "yes" and twice for "no." If Trump gets a pro-gun justice (Amy Comey Barrett) on the bench, the anti-gunner's worst nightmare could be a reality.

The answer to their problems is creating a tragedy or dancing in the blood of the victims of a convenient tragedy to make their point.

The Virginian Pilot did a story today on "Silencers". They reported that VA is number 5 on the list for the number of new registrations of Silencers from Dec 2010 to Feb 2018. Texas is number one.

They also said that silencers were banned on public streets and parks by a Va law saying Cities and counties with a population of 160,000 or over could ban them. Cities with smaller populations like Charlottesville have recently tried to get that number lowered so they could ban them.

So the shooter supposedly had a legally bought "silencer" but broke the law by having it on a public street.
