I am sold on the surefire system, although their customer service/technical didn't answer a question to my satisfaction and so I ask the real experts here at the hide.

I want to buy one suppressor for 3 weapons:

a) HK M91 (M15x1 thread)
b) Remmy 700 .308 SPS Varmint (unthreaded so far)
c) Future 338 purchase, likely to be custom build or TRG-42.

I explained this to their CS rep who told me that it was 'impossible' and that the thread adapters don't work that way and I would have to buy two suppressors, one .308 and one .338. Based on all my hide searches...this is incorrect.

So, if I wanted to use Surefire's FA338SS (338 stainless can)on all three weapons above would it even be possible? If so, what adapters would I need?

Well, you can put it on the 338 and 308 with no real problem, just thread the 308 for the 338 break, that's what I did. The HK would be a problem. There is no factory methof to do it, you'd need to machine an adapter to get to the normal 338 break thread and make it long enough to get the clearance at the back. Can you do that, yes, would I suggest it, no.

Have Mark McWillis at www.trosusa.com make you an adapter for the HK.
It looks like the HK has the required 2.75" of free barrel rear of the muzzle.

Surefire makes the break available in different threads;
MB338SS01 Muzzle Brake Suppressor Adapter to the Accuracy International AW and AWM rifles
MB338SS02 Muzzle Brake Suppressor Adapter to the Sako TRG-42 and other rifles
MB338SS03 Muzzle Brake Suppressor Adapter to any .338 cal. (8.6 mm) rifle
MB338SS04 Muzzle Brake Suppressor Adapter to the Armalite AR-30 and other rifles

I asked this same question to Bryon of Major-Malfunction up at the suppresser shoot they had up here in Ft. Worth last month. He said that surefire does not make a 7.62 adaptor that can be used on the 338 can. So to the best of my knowledge you would have to buy 2 different cans.

As long as you buy three .338 muzzle brake adapters, and used them one all your rifles then you will be fine. This is a no-brainer.

The HK will pose the most problems, but the right machinist should be able to make it work.

Yeah, i don't see why this wouldn't work assuming you can get all your rifles threaded to accept the .338 adaptors.

Do not buy the AI 338 adapter. They supply no blueprints to contour the barrel properly per a privacy agreement that SF and AI both signed.

Re: Surefire 338 can: 'impossible' to put onto .308?

You can use the .338 can on a .308. All you have to do is have the Surefire brake put on to the proper threads on the rifle. Any smith can install it properly. I have a Surefire .338 brake on my .308 and 300WM. My team mate has one on his 6.5 Creedmoor as well.

3/4-24 is the threading needed. Maybe the CS rep thought you were trying to put it on a 5/8-24 thread pattern that usually comes on .308s.

Re: Surefire 338 can: 'impossible' to put onto .308?

What The deal is the .338 and 762MG use a large lock ring. Those suppressors can only go onto the larger dia adapters. They are not able to work like a 762K on a 5.56 adapter but the other posts about running the .338 adapters on the other weapons is correct as a solution.

Re: Surefire 338 can: 'impossible' to put onto .308?

I use a 338P-1 from TBAC on my 338LM as well as my 260 with great success.
I suppose there will be a day when I will want a suppressor on both guns, so then I will have TBAC thread the 30P-1 to the 3/4x20 Barrett 98B threads or get the break version threaded the same.

I would be careful putting a suppressor on a 91. You have to change locking pieces when you suppress a roller-locker or you could wind up damaging the receiver.

Thanks to all who replied so far.

I'm going to be going to trousa to get something machined up, thanks for the reference I'll be sure to let them know who referred me.

Wolvenhaven: Thanks for the heads up, I didn't know that suppressing these roller lockers really messed things up. I'll go onto hkpro and start a thread, it's been discussed a bit before and it seems 50/50 with people putting the 18 locker in when suppressing. Do you have any first-hand info? Easy to change out or what?
