Surefire EP3?

http://www.surefire.com/EP3-Sonic-Defenders

I just ordered a set, but I'm still not sure how they'll work for my intended use.

I want something that allows me to hear normally, but will block or reduce gunfire.

I'll be using them while hunting waterfowl.

Does the plug have to be closed in order for them to provide any protection, or do they reduce loud noises with it opened?

Re: Surefire EP3?

Thanks!
I hope they'll do the trick.
I couldn't stand the thought of wearing muffs all day, and the game ear types are way too expensive.

Re: Surefire EP3?

I use them for various kind of hunting.

I can hear where the geese are just fine. Wind is the biggest factor up here in whether or not I can hear them, not the plugs.

I've used these for about 3 years for shooting and work (F-15's and B-52's) and had never had to use the plugs. In fact, I just take the plugs off completely.

Me too, they are great.

Re: Surefire EP3?

I was finally able to find some local and bought a few pairs to try out. I read good things about them online and one of the guys in our squad at the last competition I was in had a pair. I had a chance to ask him a couple questions and he loved them. I tried them once outdoors shooting rifles, suppressed and unsuppressed and they worked just fine. Not sure how well they will work indoors but we're members at an indoor range as well and I think I'll be there sometime soon and plan to give them a go. I generally use electric ear pro but sometimes it's a PITA.

Re: Surefire EP3?

I've used these for about a year now, both indoor pistol shooting, and outdoor long range and course shooting. They work great. In fact I've been up here at MWTC Bridgeport, playing an agressor for 5th Marines, and we've all got AKs, PKMs, and SVDs. The blanks they fire are ridiculously loud without plugs, and I've spent the last week in the same hooch and hillside as one of my PKM gunners. My head rang the first 2 days out, until I found my EP3s in my plate carrier pouch (thanks to my wife, thinking ahead for me when I was packing

), and I had no further issues with the full auto, or my own AK/SVD right next to my head. And when you've got them, there's always guys who think they're full custom fit plugs and ask a lot of questions. Most of them end up buying some and finding me to thank me later. And the sizing makes them great for anyone. The mediums work great for both me and my wife, and my brother runs his larges without issue.
