I just purchased a lightly used Surefire M600 Scout light to put on my 22lr training upper. It came as a kit which included second, larger head which can be installed on the Scout body and also a Surefire FM33 IR filter, as seen here: LINK

I'm stuck in bed recovering from surgery so I can't get my PVS-14 out to test it and was wondering if others have used these and how they work. I installed in on an old Surefire handheld (6 series) and was thinking that it could come in handy if it provides usable IR light. Just curious what I can expect from it as far as throw and spread.

TIA

Re: Surefire IR filters, any good?

It's a repeat of what has already been said but they do work. I have used them for years with no complains. It obviously is not the same as a dedicated IR light since it is a filter but they work.

Re: Surefire IR filters, any good?

If you want more power, look for a P60 drop in that is NON LED based.

Any time you try to use an IR filter with an LED light source you will only have a tiny amount of Infrared light as the total output. LEDs are very narrow in the band of light that they put out. The one exception being the Surefire Vampire but it has been specifically engineered as a dual source and it is hugely expensive.

The Surefire P61 lamp will give you double the power. 120 lumens over the 60 lumens of the P60. There are other Incan drop ins that run even brighter, I don't know any off the top of my head.

Re: Surefire IR filters, any good?

I use the SF filter over my light ( sorry don't have the model number), it is pretty decent with the PVS on the head, and a IT laser on the rifle. I could use the IR illum on the laser, but I look at a lot more critters than I shoot, and I'd rather not be lasing non shooters. The flashlight gives a more diffused light, wider field of view, and less bloom.

Plus, a flip of the cover and I have bright white light, one less thing to carry. Since the body of the light is 1" OD, thinking of mounting it in a small Larue type mount to stick it on a rail, yet be able to put it in my hand easy.

Try to post a pic tonight if I can.

Re: Surefire IR filters, any good?

I use a M600 with a IR filter on it quite a bit, puts out pretty good IR light. I haven't tried any dedicated illuminators so I can't give an accurate comparison of them.
