Is it possible to get a Surgeon action for less than their suggested retail pricing? I'm trying to justify starting with a Surgeon action as opposed to starting with a Rem 700 SA and having the modifications done.

Bugholes sales them for $1295.00 and If they are in stock at Brownells they give Mil/LE discount. I got mine for $1218.00 shipped with discount.

Have done it both ways, and have older Rem700 actions that "cleaned up" OK.
Seems to be a crapshoot, some turn out OK, some don't.
Suggest getting a Surgeon 591, or GAP Templar, or LAPrecision Signature, or Bighorn action for your custom build.
Otherwise you will be spending your money to fix/improve the problems left behind on a mass-produced factory action and bolt.

That is some solid advice. Plus by the time you price in the extra's that you would pay for on a stock action (side bolt release, etc) you will see that you are in the same neighbor hood as the customs.

Personally I think the Stiller Tac 30 as being the best bang for your buck. It might not be the best action in the world but it beats a factory 700 action by far and can be had for $900 or so. Throw on the barrel of your choice chambered, crowned etc. and your looking at $1400 or so. Add $1k or less for the stock/chassis of your choice and you have a kick ass rifle for $2000+/-.

If you end up spending $900 then might as well spend $1075 and get a Bighorn.
It's a slippery slope once you start looking at it. I was doing the same thing, my $2900 build turned into a $4400 build FAST! I got exactly what I wanted though, and could not be happier. I'm glad I chose Surgeon, it's an excellent action.

Check out Defiance Machine. I think they make alot of the actions gun builders use. I have heard good things about them.

There are a lot of good actions on the market but the factory Rem 700 isn't one of them by the time you do all the shit to make it decent.
I'll probably use a Surgeon for my next build. However, my Tac 30 .308 with 20" Krieger is shooting sub .5moa w/ factory 168gr. FGMM's. It's in a Gen II KRG W3C folder w/a NF 5.5-22x50mm ZS HS MOAR on top, FWIW.
I also don't believe the Tac 30 is Stiller's best action.

I've found you can buy gunshow 700s or a new 700 for Wal-Mart, sell off what you don't need, and end up with much less in the whole rifle than you would going with a custom and it will shoot every bit as well.

Now given Surgeons $1350ish price point, how do say GAPs Templar, and SACs Alpha 11 and other Defiance built actions comepare given then $1200-ish price point? Better bang for the buck vs Surgeon, or is Surgeon still the real deal and worth the higher price point?

Out of curiosity, have you seen in the firearms forum where bugholes is selling the Stiller lonestar special run of actions?
Very similar kind of deal to the old Surgeon RSR. A strong action with some extras, within tight tolerances, that is ready to go right out of the box. I ordered one the other day myself. $775 plus $15 shipping for a custom action from a top tier custom action maker - including recoil lug?
Its an awesome deal on them right now. Only down side is you need to be willing to go with a long action right now as I think he already sold out the shorts.

I have learned custom anything comes with a price. I have a trued rem 700 that shoots great. Purchased the rifle then had work done to help the performance. Am in the process of building a 260 rem and have settled on a surgeon for this because I didn't have another action. As far as performance I don't have the ability to outshoot either. For me it is a mental advantage knowing that I have the best that I could afford. Good luck these choices are not cheap.

Why all the love for the 700? They are generally untrue, lack the features of custom actions, and end up costing about the same amount by the time you pump money into them to make them closer to what a custom action is.

I have all Remington's. All have been trued up and function very well, and are extremely accurate, once the factory barrel has been replaced. I'm not looking for anything fancy.
There's a lot to be said for the custom actions, and if that's what you want, there are multiple selections that you'll be happy with.
If you already have the Remington, really look into having it cleaned up before you pull the trigger on a custom.

You may OR may not regret just working over your factory action...but you will not regret getting a Surgeon. I felt like a proud new father when I picked mine up from the FFL. The more I shoot and work mine the slicker it gets. I love mine.
