Surgeon Action Question

Re: Surgeon action question

Go with the long action. It fits into standard Rem long action foot print stocks.

The XL Action gives you the option of the .338 LM (as well as a 30 MOA Rail). Unless you think you'll build a .338LM or something else with a .590 bolt face in the future I would go with the 1086 (Long Action) as <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-style: italic">RedDevil</span></span> and <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-style: italic">Wade</span></span> both suggested. Note that the 1086s' have 20 MOA Rails instead of 30 MOA Rails as on the 1581 XLs'.

Re: Surgeon Action Question

The XL is listed at 3lbs 10oz for the repeater; the 1086 is 2lbs 5oz. I'd run the 1086 just for the weight advantage.

Not sure what Tac-Ops barrel engravings have to do with this thread.

That was part of my point: Why use the big (<span style="font-style: italic">"XL"</span>) action, incurring additional weight and expense when not needed?

Absolutely nothing. The engraving photos are part of a "cut n' paste" from my <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-style: italic">"Tac Ops "Tac 70" .338 Lapua in Birdsong Camo!"</span></span> thread showing a .338 LM built on a Surgeon 1581 XL. Now back on topic?

Re: Surgeon Action Question

I am going with the 1581XL action and a set of 3 bolts for a single shot test bed rifle to try out different calibers and bullets all in one action. But I will never carry the rifle at all as it has a nice wheeled case waiting for it to be built. And it will spend its entire life sitting in a nice f class style stock shot off of a pedestal rest. I can't wait for it to be finished! Have a second case just for barrels to keep the rifle case from getting so heavy it damages itself. Once this rifle is complete I will might consider selling my 700 SA and LA as I wont really need them as I use them for the same purpose as this one rifle will be for. I have my hunting guns and I have my target guns and they have nothing in common. The XL action from surgeon is built for target and or large caliber applications and using it outside of these parameters is a waist of engineering and money. I have a 700LA in 300winmag and it has enough room to be able to load rounds extremely long using my HS precision bottom metal and magazine system. In fact seated to factory depth I can slide my finger down in front of the rounds in the magazine. This is on a long action so I could see no reason for using a 338lapua length action for the same application.

Re: Surgeon Action Question

300wm=1086 action, its a tank. the guys at surgeon are good as it gets when it comes to puttin a rifle together. if their spec.'d scalpel comes with a 1086 you can bet thats what it needs. i got a 300 scalpel and its a laser beam on rails.

Re: Surgeon action question

MS,

I have been running the Surgeon M1086 for the .300WinMag and 7mmRM with very, very good results. Very well scaled to those cartridges and super solid. Accuracy as well as reliability are top shelf. Here are a couple from a group of .300WM that recently went out.

As with the other Surgeon products, that action will serve you and your grand kids well.
