Looking for someone who has experience using both of these actions. Positives, negatives? Any insight is appreciated. Use will be mostly bipod shooting from 100- 1000 yards. Rapid fire is not of importance.

Thanks

Re: Surgeon or Badger M2008?

I own both,

Badger M2008

Pros
1. short bolt throw
2. easy to swap barrels out
3. built like a tank
4. runs Remington triggers and bottom metals
5. it is very reasonably priced

Cons
1. the bolt lift is pretty heavy compared to a 90 degree lift
2. weighs almost a pound more than the surgeon 591
3. stock options are somewhat limited, most are special ordered
4. base is not integrated

Surgeon 591

Pros
1. very smooth bolt operation
2. fits Remington 700 pattern stocks will small modifications
3. Very well built and not extremely heavy
4. numerous options for stocks
5. integrated base and recoil lug

Cons
1. 90 degree bolt lift, I prefer the 60 degree
2. standard Remington extractor, I prefer the mini-16
3. expensive, the price has gone up quite a bit in the last few years

I am sure there are more comparisons, you really cant go wrong with either, they are both great products back by great companies

Re: Surgeon or Badger M2008?

I had an early M2008, it was awesome and then one day it just stopped working right. Lots of failures to fire, sent it in for the firing pin fix but I'm not sure they did anything to it. I went through 3 different triggers and finally got it to be acceptable and then sold it with FULL disclosure of my history. I was never so happy to see a rifle go out of my safe. Maybe those issues are gone with the newer ones, others will need to chime in.

Surgeon was what I got after the M2008, never had an issue and I always knew it would perform. Highly recommend them.

Now, if I were to do it all over, I'd just get an AI AE MkII from the start and rock on. The M2008 was an obvious clone attempt of an AI rifle, so why not just get the original from the start and you'll have a dependable rifle for life.

Re: Surgeon or Badger M2008?

You guys are making it tough on me I have owned AI's and TRG's and absolutely love them both. I don't want to buy either of them just for the action though. If anyone has a trg or AE action that they would like to sell...I would do that in a heartbeat!!!!!!!!!!!!! They almost $1300 price tag on the Surgeon is a bit of a drawback. I could get a nice Barnard with a sweet trigger included for that price. I guess a Barnard is not out of the question too.

Re: Surgeon or Badger M2008?

TRG is starting to get aftermarket parts as well. If you look up KRG-OPS its a buddies company and they make some cool stuff for the TRG.

I am rocking two Surgeons and working on a third. I have a 5.56, 308, and working on a 300wm. I love my surgeons and they have always treated me well.

Badger has a really cool owner. I can always call and get good info out of Marty.

Re: Surgeon or Badger M2008?

I own a few Badger actions.... never had an issue with them. A lighter firing pin spring can often relieve some of the stiff bolt lift.

I own Surgeons as well, excellent performers and built solid. I just wish that they made the 591 with a removable rail. And don't say well you cant buy the RSR. They are different actions....

Re: Surgeon or Badger M2008?

One other plus on the Badger action is it can run the AW mags. I had a GAP Surgeon and still have a GAP SH Valkyrie Badger. I liked them both and have not had a problem with either. As Adam B posted they each has plus and minus attributes. I will say you can't go wrong either one, at least in my experience.

Re: Surgeon or Badger M2008?

That is tough, I own 3 Badgers and 3 Surgeons, no RSRs. Love them both. No problems with the Badger 1st gen here. I have #43 of 100. Flip a coin, if cost is not a factor. Both companies have excellent customer service. Marty and Preston/crew are always great people to talk with.

Re: Surgeon or Badger M2008?

Currently own and shoot three Badger actions. All are the Gen I actions and I have no trouble with any of them. I do need to send Marty the bolt back on one for the new cocking piece though. Just haven't gotten to it.
I have yet to own a Surgeon. I have seen them and like what I saw and am not against owning one. But $1300 is about $400 over a Badger.
