Surgeon Repeater Action/single round feeding

Maybe "lock open" was the wrong analogy. I don't have any experience with detachable mag/bolt gun. Just curious, thanks for the input. (I did have an mauser 96, I believe the the follower had to be pushed down before you could close the bolt). Thanks again.

It is a bolt action, there is no reason for it to lock open. Depending on the bottom metal, it will have either a fixed, top loading magazine with up to 5 rounds capacity or a removable magazine with, usually, 10 rounds capacity. Either way, unless you are in the heat of battle, counting rounds loaded and then rounds expended really should not cause a great deal of mental strain. I know how many rounds I intend to shoot and load that many. I often just single load each round, I have 4 bolt action rifles and have zero trouble push feeding rounds into them. 2 Remington style short actions, a Pierce and a Surgeon, a Ruger Gunsite scout and an ancient Mauser 98.

I have a Surgeon action and the magazine fallower keeps the bolt from traveling forward after the last round. This is only when I use AICS magazines. It does not lock if I se a different manufactured mag. Same goes for my Stiller, but only with AI mags. Not really a big deal to me. I don't mind at all.

Thanks for the useful info Armada. My intent was to find out if you could feed a single round without putting it in the mag. So it sounds like with the AICS mags, one would have to put a single round in the mag or push the follower down for single round feeding. My fault, I need to learn to ask more clear questions...lol. Thanks again

I don't have a problem with mine if I leave a mag in, and it does not matter if it is a magpul or an AICS. If you are having problems it sounds like you should adjust your mag as stated above

My Surgeon 1086 feed 300 Win Mag single feed with AICS magazine in place. All my push feed actions will do this except for my AI AW. That bolt will lock against the follower. Other AWs do not and there appears to be just enough play in my mags to position the it high enough to bring on the condition. A slight tug of the mag downward relieves it and I can then single feed that rifle. I do own one push feed action that will not single-feed properly without a single shot adaptor in place. It is a TC Icon in 6.5 Creedmoor and came with a single-feed adaptor for the mag. BTW, the mag does not lock the bolt open there either.

Hey Snowman, I may have misunderstood your post. FYI, My Surgeon 338 Lapua also locks open. If I'm single feeding with a mag inserted, I just don't pull the bolt all the way to the back. The only time I single feed is when I'm sighting in or prone shooting. I have single fed without a magazine and it's just a learning curve. After a few rounds, you'll get the hang of it. You sort of push forward while dropping in the new round. I hope this makes a little sense. My son is pretty good at it, but he is only 12 and has much smaller fingers than I do.

If you lived in my area, I would show you and let you shoot the rifle.
