Surprised with my new OBR 7.62

Got my new OBR 7.62 this week and am pleased with what I see thus far.

However, I did notice something different about the setup - To properly join the upper and lower receivers, the hammer of the Two-Stage Geisselle SSA trigger has to be manually pull and locked back first or the hammer will hit the BCG. In fact it is impossible to join the two receivers with the hammer in the normal forward position.

This is not hard to do, but very different than what is SOP for an AR type assembly, this step is not mentioned in the manual. Has anyone run across this in either an OBR or other AR-10 configurations?

I have never tried to close any of my ar's with the hammer in the foward position.

Just make sure you are not pulling the trigger and letting the hammer fly while the upper is seperated from the lower. This can lead to issues if you aren't slowing down the hammer before impact with the lower.

I have had this issue with a GAP built DPMS platform 10 with same trigger. not really a big deal.

I don’t really see this as an issue as I mentioned before, it is not hard to do, was just surprised.

The ARs I have handled before all can close without this manipulation and it was also not in LaRue’s instructions which I think is a mistake. Their uppers and lowers tend to be very high precision and so very tight, the problem with this is if you did not know it was the hammer you might think it is the fit of the upper and lower and try to force them together.

Maybe it's just me, but I've never heard of any type of "SOP" requiring the hammer to be forward during assembly nor have I ever used this practice. In fact the military's manual (TM 9-1005-319-10) makes no mention of this, instead stating "Selector lever must be on safe or semi before closing upper receiver" during assembly. Bushmaster's manual says "Selector should be on safe before closing upper receiver". Yes, I looked both of them up just to make sure I'm not crazy or getting middle aged senility.

I'm not one to be a stickler to the manuals as I'm more of a what works kind of guy. But calling this SOP when it isn't even in the books or taught in the military, something I know a thing or two about, seems to be a bit of a stretch. I haven't been out that long either, but who knows.....

Where exactly is this SOP of the hammer being forward you speak of written? Got a link to the TM or is this another manufacturer's procedure that I'm not aware of?

Sorry, but I think we have a misunderstanding here.

I for one don’t think it is SOP requiring the hammer to be forward during assembly. This is why I say being required to do so in this case is “very different than what is SOP for an AR type assembly”.

My point is that since this requirement is <span style="text-decoration: underline">NOT </span>SOP, they need to state it in than manual. Hope that clarifies things as we actually agree with each other, not disagree.

Gotcha. In that case, I was misunderstanding your posts.

Some manuals are of the "How to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich" variety, and others not quite detailed down to every nitty-gritty step. It just sounds like theirs is the latter in this case.

I would qualify those instructions as “How to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich” variety, very detailed and with photos no less, but for whatever reason, they left that key part out – thus the question.

As it turns out, I understand from a response I received from another board that full auto BCG like this one always require the hammer to be pulled back which is news to me as I have not run across FA BCGs before.

I learn something new which is good, but it still does not make sense that they would leave that detail out.

You posted this in two places. By now I hope you are getting the impression that you are nitpicking about a non-existent problem...the same impression the rest of us are getting. I'm beginning to wonder what your motivation really is for this? Most people keep their selector on safe, and avoid even the possiblility of a dry fire with the upper receiver removed - not to mention generic safety concerns. The only time I ease the hammer forward on a naked lower is when I'm going to be leaving it seperate from the upper for an extended period of time and then I always depress the hammer again before pinning to an upper. The FCG geometry was made to be manipulated from front to back, not crushed down from above. Change your "SOP" to a better one. You can use mine if you like.

Shouldn't you pull the charging handle back to check to see if it's unloaded before you even take it apart to begin with? If you indeed checked your chamber, the hammer would've been pulled back. Wouldn't you want to install the same way it came out anyways? Not really a updated SOP required, more like common sense to me IMO.
