Hello, north GA shooter here. Well long story short, I am about to take the plunge in a nice spotting scope and I have two on my mind. First the sts 65 by swarovski has really nice glass but then the leupold mk4 is nice and really compact with the offer of a mil-dot reticle. I can't find anywhere that has both to do a side by side comparison, so I figured you guys might be the ones with all the answers. Backpack hunting/Tactical appliation is what I have in mind. Please help me resolve this, your opinions appreciated.

Re: Swarovski or Leupold Spotting Scope

For backpack hunting and lightweight, I would do the Luepold. I have used a buddys Luepy and it works well, although not in the same ball park. I believe some military units use the Leupy as well.. I have the ATS 80 mm Swaro and it's not little, I know it's not the 65mm like you had meantioned but this might be a little bit of info for you...

Guide I hunted with a few weeks back had a swarvo and the glass is great. One thing he said about the zeiss is a guide buddy of his sent a zeiss in for repairs and they sent him a $600 bill, on his swarvo if he breaks it they send him a new one. I would check into the warranty's, I do not have either and only report what I saw and the one report on warranty

Light wieght is fine, but excellent optics is the first requirement for a spotter IMHO, no need to pack a light wieght into the Mountains just to find out it's optics just won't give enough resolution to decide if that Ram is the one you want. That means climbing the mountain to find out. Give me the better optics every time in my spotter

Re: Swarovski or Leupold Spotting Scope

If you want a reticle you might consider a U.S. Optics, not small but very tough for field use. Have seen them used for $800 or less.
The Luepold in HD that I have looked through is as good as any spotter I've seen and I've looked through most of the top end spotters out there.
And yes the Zeiss.
