I am sure this question has been asked a few times and some of you are tired of answering it. I did a couple quick searches and didn't really find what I am looking for.
I am in the process of building my first real precision type rifle and want to build it in a fashion that I will not have to switch parts in the near future, thus saving me money better spent on ammo and training.
Just so everyone in this thread is aware of my capability now and my intentions for this rifle I will try to explain as well as I can.
I have served active army for some time now (see sig line) and have become very intimate with the AR series rifle. I have used the 20in DMR rifle and attended the US Army Designated Marksmen Program held at Ft. Campbell. While serving most of my time as a grunt with an M4 and any optic from EOtech to Aimpoint to ACOG or even an ELCAN, I did get some valuable trigger time on the M24 and 21 series sniper systems. All of my trigger time on both systems was very informal but informative and necessary being in a scout platoon. I developed a pretty good sense in hold over at distance but lack the knowledge of actual scope adjustments at distance.
I am looking to build a rifle that I can shoot from 300-500 meters comfortably, and sometimes stretch its legs to 800 or maybe beyond. I dont plan to be shooting any sort of competition any time soon. My base gun I am starting out with is a Remington 700 AAC-SD. It has already been fitted with a harris 6-9 bipod as well as a Badger 20 MOA scope mounting rail. I currently have the factory stock and intend on keeping this for some time while I develop my skill. I am not the kind of person that trys to buy skill with fancy products. However, I do understand that a more ergonomic stock may suit me well once I outgrow the factory one.
NOW ONTO MY REAL QUESTION.
I am looking for cheap glass to 1) hold me over until I can afford S&B or the like and 2) be my learning piece that I am not afraid to get dirty with.
I am pretty familiar with the SWFA (actually tasco at the time) line of scopes. We used these exclusively on out M21 M14s. It was a fixed 10X scope and from what I saw, they were very rugged and effective. I hear that the quality has only gotten better since SWFA has taken the reigns on the scope production.
I am looking to buy the 299.00 rear focus version of the scope and a decent set of leupy/NF/badger scope rings with the setup.
My question is, Are there any other $300 dollar scopes that I should look at before dropping the dime on this one. I understand that $300 is not a lot in the world of good glass but in my experience the SS far exceeds its price.
Any help would be appreciated.
What say you SH?
