When we as a family went snorkeling at Loos Key in the keys seeing the reef sharks and being in the water with them was a first for me.

Thought it might be something we could get a parenting fail on.

Little did I realize I was more concerned when the Goliath Groupers showed up to use the pontoon boat for shade.

If one had of inhaled to sneeze it would have easily had one of my kids being the new Jonah in the whale. Those things were huge.

I was out doing night time diving in Hawaii and we were all in a circle doing a head count and buddying off. To make a long story short a 12 foot tiger shark swam into our circle. The nights activities were cancelled right on the spot.

No Ef'g way I'd ever go diving, especially at night, without a boomstick, anymore than I'd go in downtown detroit or in grizzly country unarmed.

Reminded of that string of shark attacks at Sharmel-Sheikh a few years back-took what 3 attacks in two days for them to consider closing the beach? And then they just went on a random "lets kills any and all large shark we find" binge, just to re-open the beaches and get more attacks. Five attacks in five days.

Edit: Two women were killed in attacks in same area as this one last year too, they call it the "dream beach". If your dream is a Jaws nightmare.

This fucker ate my pinfish in 189' of water and then just laid down on the bottom. Getting him up and moving for a fight was a chore.
Oh how I wished I had a conventional reel with a low gear instead of a big spinning reel.

This pic shows the shark about 20-30' down in the water. Not a great picture, but I was a little busy trying to control it.

For those that hate sharks, go fishing for them and like pointed out above, you'll see that they gotta eat too.

We catch a lot of bonnethead sharks in Tampa Bay. They only get to a max of 4'. When you pick them up by the back of the head, they literally begin shaking like a Yorkie. For sure, sharks aren't mindless eaters. They are full blown predators.

He said they used to burn them on the nose with their torches.

I’m at Long Beach, Rockport every weekend the weather cooperates.

I’m guessing anytime I’ve been in the ocean there is a shark of some species within two hundred yards.

Cape is getting scary when we go down there.

We have found a new beach we go to using a water taxi. Absolutely abandoned but the water is incredibly sharky…

I’m timid everywhere down the Cape but this is a whole ‘Nuther level.

They are very curious critters. I don't personally know of anyone that's been injured by a Goliath. If they are 300+# they aren't afraid of humans and like you mentioned, they will swim right up to someone under water.
I suppose one that's 6.5' or larger could inhale a small human, but I don't think they look at us as food. Instead I think they wonder what the hell we are.

Lots of people wreck and bridge dive around here. Plenty of people say they have had them swim right up to them. Some have said they will steal your catch from spearfishing.

I know I've lost plenty of snapper and grouper to them. You can tell the difference between them and when a shark steals your fish.
A Goliath will take the fish and fray a lot of your leader. A shark will usually bite off right behind the head.

Some of the scariest stuff I've done is snorkeling off of a reef on Guam at night. All you can see is the light beam circle where you aim it. I was relieved when the local I was with wanted to quit and go home. I caught a few octopus but he got nothing. Found out later that a week before there had been a shark attack at that same reef.

I was a lot younger and even dumber then.

Some of the scariest stuff I've done is snorkeling off of a reef on Guam at night. All you can see is the light beam circle where you aim it. I was relieved when the local I was with wanted to quit and go home. I caught a few octopus but he got nothing. Found out later that a week before there had been a shark attack at that same reef.

I was a lot younger and even dumber then.

The thing is people freak out for no reason IMO.

Especially if you are around people that know what to do it removes a lot of the risk. Also you can know instantly if that's a reef shark or a tiger shark if you have an experienced person with you.

Also people don't know what they do on land directly impacts what happens in the water. For example if a dead whale or something washes up on shore, the places that manage it have way less problems.

Also location matters a lot. If there is a river flowing into the ocean that's one place you need to stay away from if possible. Anything that washes down into the ocean is basically shark food. Also stay away from murky water and definitely don't go out on a cloudy night.

Many sharks will ambush their prey. The prey know this. On a bright day or a full moon the prey will see the shadows and get away. On an overcast or cloudy night sharks are out in full force.

In these 3rd world places, they might keep the resort nice, but a half a mile up the beach there is no telling what is out there.

In places like Hawaii if a whale washes up, it doesn't matter if it's 3am. The local work crews will be out there cutting it up and hauling it off. If they don't it will be six months before you could safely get in the water at that spot.
