I have an S&B 3-12 that is married right now to a GAP M40A3. I am now in the process having a GAP M40A5 built. Is it a bad practice to remove the scope by the rings from the optical mount and place it on the second rifle’s identical optical mount? I have a feeling that this is not advisable but I would like to hear for sure. Thanks in advance.

No problem, assuming that the rings are good quality like NF or Badger, and the base is level and square. I do it all the time. You can even log the change in zero when moving a scope from one rifle to the other.

Depends on the purpose of the guns...
If its just accurate rifles, made for shooting tigth groups then it works fine.
But if they are intended such as sniperrifles the intention is to always delivery the bullet to where you have decided it too.
In such case the idea about switching scopes and take the risk if they are remounted correctly is just to much risk and will cause problems.
So in my opinion, if you can afford two GAP rifles, then you can also afford two scopes.....

In such case the idea about switching scopes and take the risk if they are remounted correctly is just to much risk and will cause problems.
So in my opinion, if you can afford two GAP rifles, then you can also afford two scopes.....

Or you can run ARC's rings... I've done it more than a few times; the return to zero is top notch.

He didn't say anything about having them be the same zero and have to hit the same spot when going from one rifle to the other. Just swapping scopes which is fine. When I swap I go and check zero and it takes about 1-2 rounds.

Yes I do agree.
But the rifle is not a sniperrifle, its nothing you can trust or feel certain about untill you testfired it.
So its "just" an accurate rifle.

I switched a scope between a .260 and a .223 bolt. zero was always the same when I put it back on each rifle.
Scope had a secondary zero so i would put the indicator on that to remind me where it was.

Well a sniper Rifle or a huntingrifle can be used at any time, this gotta go to the range first for zeroing before use.....
