I was out at the range today to work on video for an upcoming article and boy can I pick days to try to get something done. There were steady 20 mph winds left to right with 30 mph gusts thrown in for fun and while the day wasn't as successful as I wanted it to be I did manage to figure out a few things. I've been working with this TAB sling a little bit in preparation for the article and used it to success at a few stages during a recent PRS match and so far I can say that it is a very effective and versatile sling, I like it a lot. I had a target set up at 300 yards and the plan was to shoot with my Armageddon Gear sling using the shooters loop and then do some work off the tripod and a set of trekking poles using my Bergara HMR.
Slinging up in 20+mph winds was a loser bet in the kneeling and not much better in the sitting, I was simply getting blown around too much with a full value wind, I scored one hit out of six.
Using the TAB gear sling via the tether method was surprisingly super stable. I ended up not running it under the tripod leg to gain leverage, probably because I was cold and couldn't feel my face, but it worked out fine anyway. I rolled my hips back into a double kneeling and the position was good and tight. I went three for three and shot a group that was about 2". From there I broke out a set of trekking poles and set up using the Wojcik method where the sling runs around my strong side arm and to the front of the gun. This was my first time really employing this method to send rounds down range and the stability was pretty good, I dropped one shot off the right edge due to my own mistake but two shots on steel were within 4".
I've got a picture of the target below and three of the shots just right of center are from the tripod, one of the shots within that 3 shot cluster is from the trekking poles and the other to the left of the main group is also from shooting off the trekking poles. That little guy at the bottom was the only hit when I tried shooting using the shooter's loop. All in all given the conditions today I'm happy with how it worked out because any range time is a good time.
