Re: TAB Suppressor Covers: nice stuff
Well, I guess my comment really livened this thread up! The problem with typed messages is that they can so easily be misread. At the risk of continuing the misunderstanding, I'll try again.
First of all, I have heard nothing but good things about TAB gear, and, when I was looking for a can cover, TAB was personally recommended to me and I seriously considered purchasing one. However, I did not personally feel that $65 to $70 was worth it when less expensive options were available. My comment was intended simply to note that, for the price, I would expect them to be "well made. They are sized perfectly, worked well, and seem like they will last. Nice stuff." as the original post said. I would not consider what I said to be a "bitch slap."
How much the suppressor costs should have no bearing on what a cover costs, though. If my can cost $5000, should I be willing to pay $300 for a cover? My guess is Tburkes didn't really mean that, but for those of you who are weighing in perhaps you see how interpretation enters into this.
I certainly understand that development time and all the other associated costs are involved when a product is made for sale, and that I am not counting my time when I say I can make a workable cover for less than $10. Then again, I doubt any of you consider your time when you figure out how much reloading costs.
My comment about being able to cook a TAB cover was in direct response to sobrbiker883's comment about having to scrape "melted crap" from a "cheap cover" off a can, seemingly implying that TAB covers are indestructible.
Unlike Mark S, I do care what things cost, at least related to what they provide, which brings me back to what prompted my comment to begin with. I thought the purpose of this forum was to discuss products and techniques and to provide options for people to both make decisions and to meet their needs. I have no doubt that others have searched for can covers, found the TAB gear, and weighed the benefits of a well-thought-out, supported, quality product that is still just a tube of heat-resistant material, against the possibilities of using or even making a reasonable substitute at a lower cost.
I am glad that high-quality, thoughtful, and very useful products are available, and that they are designed and made in the US, and I factor that into my buying decisions. I often pay more to support exactly those types of products and business. I also admire the creative energies that go into these kinds of products, and respect the entrepreneurial spirit and guts that goes into starting and running a business in what can be a fickle market place. I did not intend to disparage anyone or anything along the way. But we ought to be able to share divergent opinions without all the vitriol, particularly when I was at least intending to suggest an alternative and was not trying to denigrate the product mentioned.
Tburkes, my apologies. Maybe one of these days my budget, needs, and your well-thought-of products will coincide and I'll order something off my wishlist from you. In the meantime, good luck!
