OK... I just got back from the range... I leveled the scope as best I could, set the eye relief, and tightened it down... I used my lazer boresighter to ensure I would hit paper and low and behold my scope was only off 1" low and 1" right.. So I put a few rounds down range to check the action and ensure that everything cycled and fed well... Everything was awesome... So I drew up a target and put the following groups together....

Top Left Remington Standard Velocity Target 40gr.
Top Right CCI Mini-Mags High Velocity 40gr.
Bottom Left Fiocchi 40gr Standard Velocity
Bottom Right Remington High Velocity 40gr Gold Bullet...

This was not off the bipod it was shot over a crapy rail and was not near as steady as it could have been as seen by the flyers I have pointed out.. This was at 25yds (furthest I have as its dark and the outdoor 100yd was closed...) I will post more tomorrow evening at 50 and 100yd ranges.... I cant wait to see what this thing will do with some Wolf Match ammo....

Just got back from the range.... Shot out to 50yds... Not as exciting of a day as I would have liked... I immediately started having ejection problems and misfires.. My firing pin is striking the case as the extreme edge (basically where the extractor would grab the case). Before my tear down and rebuild the pin would hit more towards the center of the case. Now its barely hitting the case. I got a ton of misfires. I zeroed out using Remington High Velocity 40 gr. I needed to make 16 clicks Left and 1 click up (1/4" adjustments at 100yds) to zero at 50yds. I never had extractor problems or misfire problems no matter how dirty the weapon was before.. Im a little frustrated with the extractor and firing pin problem... Im going to rip it open tonight and see if its anything obvious...
Ed- I may take you up on your offer witht the bolt work.
I may post a picture of the 5 brands I shot today and there groupings...

The ammo is chambering fine... The round fully seats into the chamber and the bolt closes completely as I can cycle the weapon and then ensure proper bolt to barrel by looking up from the mag well.... It appears the extractor is hooking over the rim of the case and the extractor is in position on the side of the barrel as seen from the closed bolt position.... What appears is happening is the extractor is slipping off of the casing... Im wondering if the extractor maybe wore evenly with the original barrel bolt alignment and now that things have changed the extractor is sliding off the case on the worn part of the tooth.. One of my main concerns is the misfires as it is obvious that the reason is b/c of poor firing pin strikes... The firing pin is literally almost missing the case completely... Before the rebuild the pin would strike roughly a 1/3 of the casing from the edge towards center. Now, it appears the pin is striking maybe a 1/10 of the casing... I know that there are alterations that can be done to the bolt (pinning the pin down) that I read about on rimfire central and Ed mentioned above...
Im just frustrated b/c this rifle has NEVER misfired regardless of ammo or cleanliness..... I could put hundreds of rounds through it without cleaning and never have a malfunction... Shoot fast / or slow and accuracy nor cycling was affected.... That is the reason I chose this rifle to make a trainer on was b/c of its reliability... Now Im finding that after changing things it doesnt cycle or work as it should... I just need to do some fine tuning... As frustrating as it is I actually look forward to continuing the quest to make this rifle better. I cant make a trip to the range today, but I will be making a few trips this week.... I'll keep everyone posted and any advice would be great....

i had issues with my 10/22 when i first swapped in a .920 barrel. the extractor wasnt lined up with the groove cut in the barrel. despite the barrel and V block being lined up perfectly flat and engaging the way it should, i have to loosen the v block and rotate the barrel just a little bit. the V block is now croocked-ish but the ammo feeds and the action is smoother now that the extractor isnt sliding in against the cut out. that may help, may not. midway always seems to have volquartsen or power custom extrtactors on sale.

i also found that when i was putting it all together, the barrel didnt free float so i opened the channel in my boyd's blaster and got the barrel to float. later i was handling the rifle by the barrel and i felt the shock shift. since the receiver is only held by one screw, opening the barrel channel actually let the whole action move side to side, pivoting around the takedown screw. a few layers of scotch tape in the channel an i was back to a solid action.

Axeman- I figured what you said was the case so I did remove the barrel and put it all back together again, unfortunately I havent gotten to the range to see if it has helped.... As far as the action and barrel moving around the takedown screw I know exactly what your talking about... The B&C stock as pressure pads at both ends of the barrel that the barrel rests on very tightly (Im assuming to counter the single takedown screw). I installed the adjustable v-block that has a setscrew to push up on the barrel to counter act the barrel-droop and the first time I assembled the weapon I didnt use the set screw and the barrel felt much tighter against the two pads... This time I did adjust the setscrew (to see if that would help my ejection problems) but I noticed the same thing you did.. My barrel now fits loosely at the end of the stock and I can feel it move in the barrel groove... I think I may loosen the set screw to allow the barrel to fit sit more into the stock... I know barrels should be free floated but on a .22 and with only 1 take down screw I think its prudent to keep it resting tightly in the stock....

there is one aftermarket receiver with a second lug at the rear of the receiver for a more secure "fit" so to speak. im pretty sure thats why stock 10/22s have the barrel band...think about it. i also use a power custom scope base thats longer and screws into the 4 holes on the receiver and has two holes over the barrel for a way to lock it all together, but i havent drilled and tapped the barrel yet. volquartsen has one that attaches only to the barrel and cantilevers over the receiver so your scope and barrel are all pointed the same way. when i built my pair, a guy said people were adding a second takedown screw in the forearm and tapping the underside of the barrel. havent gotten to that point myself, but it was a while back and other ways around may have been found by now.

when my barrel wasnt indexed properly, i could feel the drag while working the action by hand. i need to go over them both again as soon as i get a new scope for them. that and match loads would always jam on me. high or standard velocity worked like a charm, but the match stuff was spotty at best. no jams with high velocity at all. i need to shave the bottom of my bolt i guess for the match ammo to really shine

Axeman- I did see that aftermarket reciever with the rear lug and maybe I will end up going that route eventually. I also like the idea that the rear lug reciever is also stainless and so Im sure it weighs a little more and would be a little more forgiving... Your right about the barrel band though. My first aftermarket stock (tapco pictured above) didnt have the barrel band, but it had a plastic rail that had 6 screws holding it down.. Basically a 6 inch long barrel band...
I just noticed your location is Topeka... Im currently in Newport News VA as Im military but home is Holton KS. I plan on being back in Aug sometime... Maybe we could hook up and do some shooting or something...

If your barrel and receiver are moving around, that can be solved with bedding. I have the same B&C stock you do. I removed both of the pressure pads in the barrel channel, and then bedded the rear half of the receiver, and the first 2 inches of the barrel channel. The receiver does not move at all, and the barrel is free floated except for the first 2 inches. It very solid and the only movement is at the very end of the forarm of the stock, but the barrel does not make contact.

Mkcoastie, i am up for that. i worked with a few people from holton at my last job. plus you guys are really close to the public range in horton. when you get back, let me know. there is also the range here. capitol city has NRA highpower matches once a month, plus garand and service rifle matches, smallbore, pistol and shotgun stuff too.

I gave the 10/22 the full treatment to see what the TacSol barrel was really capable of because I've been giving serious though to replacing it.

-Devcon bedded B&C Anschutz stock with Al pillar. Free-floated, then new pressure pad added.
-Radius-ed and polished bolt
-Polished trigger components and added over-travel stop
-Upgraded charge handle assembly
-Added butt hook for better control
-Added cheek rest

The only thing left is to do is the JB weld trick to get rid of the pre-travel in the trigger.

Set-up at 50 yards and fired some groups with Wolf MT, Rem SS and Winchester SS TCHP. Winchester shot around 1-1.2" and Rem was up to 1.2-1.4". Here are the Wolf MT groups.

Shooting sequence was left-to-right and down. There was a 0.5 mil Down adjustment after the first two groups and a 0.2 mil Right adjustment after the first group in the second row. Seems consistently in the .6's, probably around 3/4" with 10 shot groups.

Wondering how much better a 16.5" GM, Kidd or Shilen will be... Rimfirecentral has a 3/8" at 50 yard challenge. Not many entries, and none are 16.5" barrels. For groups under 0.4 consistently, I'd make the switch...

Sorry...been busy for awhile.

I got the 16" Fluted GM for my build. I liked the look of the stainless with the blk receiver and stock. It was a coin toss over blued vs stainless. I think I would have been happy with either. Sitting next to my 10/22T with a 18" baarrel it looks different, but I like its handling. I like the 10/22T's handling too. Just wanted something different.

Kombayioch- The added hook looks good. Im curious what it looks like finished. The target looks good too. Id love to see photos of the complete rifle.
Ive been swamped all week and have been unable to do much shooting of the 10/22. I will be tearing the bolt apart again to check out the firing pin problem.. The rifle cycles now after the last time I tore it down and looked at the extractor. I plan on adjusting the set screw on the v-block as I think I have it a little high.. I will take the firing pin out again and reinstall just to make sure that theres not a installation problem that is causing the firing pin to miss the shell.. I am just barely touching the edge of the casing. I may just leave it apart for this week and maybe do some of the upgrades to the bolt at work including grinding the back of the bolt down, polishing the hammer and trigger group, and pinning the firing pin down. I will also be installing the new mag release too if I have the right tap at work... We'll see how it goes.. Once this thing is hitting and cycling properly I will most definetly shoot another set of groups and post pictures... I know that one thing that will effect my goup size at 100yds though will be the fixed 10x scope. I shot a group on my .308 at 10x and another at 16x and it tightened up my groups considerably just being able to see better and hold on target better. I can only imagine what it would do to my groups with a higher power scope. However, I believe I will stick to the 10x as thats what I will eventually have on all my rifles...

I'm still working on the stock... took the belt sander to the ridiculously large comb and re-shaped it. Just need to sand down the JB Weld I used to seal it and re-install the rear flush cup. Its a lot more like an A5 now.

Also did some more work on the trigger and am hoping it helps a little more. Tested it again mid-way thru the work and the groups looked like they were heading into the high 0.5s. I think this TacSol barrel can potentially produce consistent groups in the 0.5s. Still thinking about the Kidd though. I think you made a better choice choosing the GM over the TacSol.

I'm running the Falcon 4-14FFP on this rifle and I like it a lot. It focuses well at short distances, even at the higher magnifications.

I look forward to seeing the stock copleted. Sounds like you have alot of reconstruction going on with it... I do like the heavier barrel... Im looking at tinkering with the bolt this week at at work... Im hoping to have some time on a grinder and drill press to really get some better quality out of my stock bolt.. As soon as I get a good day I'll get it out to the range and really get it going.. I just got a few boxes of Aquila Match ammo so I'll see what it can do... I just saw a guy at the range today with a CZ453 shooting off of a bagged sled and he was shooting some of the aquila match and was shooting the same size group I would shoot with standard velocity Fiochi leaning over an ammo box so Im really excited about the potential accuracy of this rifle...

Just bought the supply's I need to do some bolt work. As of now, my 10/22 is cycling, ejecting, and firing OK. I get alot of failure to fires as my firing pin is striking at the extreme edge of the case. Im going to tear the bolt apart and ensure that I have the firing pin spring in place. Im going to pin the firing pin down using a 1/16th drill bit and roll pin, Im going to drill and tap my trigger housing so I can install my rimfire technologies mag release, and I plan on polishing the bolt (maybe). I will post pictures of the finished work upon completion. Hopefully pinning the firing pin will cure my striking placement on the case and curing the failure to fire problems.

Ive got a Tac Sol on my 10/22 and its top notch in fit and finish. It also shoots great and I opted for the threaded version for my checkmate can. Also the weight is amazing

So I ended up only doing about half of the work I said I would. I drilled and tapped the trigger housing to be able to install the Rimfire Technologies extended magazine release (more in a minute). I did not end up pinning the firing pin down as I didnt want to ruin my bolt or do it wrong. So I ended up lightly sanding the bottom edge of the firing pin to remove the machine/casting marks Then I took polishing pad and polishing compound and polished the sanded parts of the firing pin... Then I took the same compound and polished the bolt face to a mirror finish and then lightly sanded the bottom of the bolt and polished it as well. The bolt now has a really shiny and smooth finish compared to factory. Then I reassembled and funtion tests were sat. I plan on taking it to the range tonight/tomorrow for test firing.
Now, I believe everyone should have one of these mag releases. The Rimfire Technologies pull style mag release and auto bolt release are awesome... It looks good and functions perfectly. No instead of jamming my finger into the reciever and pulling the mag out I reach out with my trigger finger and pull on a trigger style release and the mag drops free without having to pull or fanagle. Very well worth the money and I will post more pictures shortly.

Well, finished the accurizing the trigger and still no change. The TacSol barrel still does groups mostly in the 0.6's and 0.7's with match ammo. I get the occasional 0.4 and the very rare 0.3, but these are not the norm. Sometimes it will throw a flyer right out of the park. HP non-match ammo groups usually around 1-1.5".

I fired some groups with the bolt gun just to make sure it wasn't me and it was consistently in the 0.2's and 0.3's. Debatting whether I should just throw a red dot on it and call it a day or spring for a KIDD barrel.

Took my TocSol barrel out last weekend, still shooting good after over 10,000 rounds. Hit a grape second shot at 75 yards, decent. Worth the investment for sure.
